{"id":38521,"date":"2022-12-18T12:03:38","date_gmt":"2022-12-18T17:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=38521"},"modified":"2022-12-18T12:03:38","modified_gmt":"2022-12-18T17:03:38","slug":"junkyard-gem-1967-ford-fairlane-ranchero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=38521","title":{"rendered":"Junkyard Gem: 1967 Ford Fairlane Ranchero"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After decades of making plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australian_pound\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">pounds<\/a> selling <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/Australia\/Ford\/Ford-Trucks\/1935-Ford-Utilities-Foldout\/slides\/1935_Ford_Utilities_Foldout-02.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">coupe utilities Down Under<\/a> (<a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/australia\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Australia<\/a> didn&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5ZTeWLA1LAs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">switch\u00a0to the dollar<\/a> and its futuristic decimalized system\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y6JawKH2yaQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">until 1966<\/a>), <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Ford<\/a> decided to begin selling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2014\/02\/26\/ford-australia-ute-turns-80-as-production-winds-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">a modern ute<\/a> in the United States for the 1957 model year. This was our <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford_Ranchero\/1957_Ford_Ranchero_Foldout\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">introduction to the Ranchero<\/a>, and it was the first of many cartrucks (or truckcars, if you prefer) sold during the 1960s-1980s American heyday of this vehicle type. For 1960, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2020\/02\/junkyard-find-1961-ford-falcon-ranchero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Ranchero moved to Ford&#8217;s new compact platform<\/a>, becoming <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford_Ranchero\/1960-Ford-Ranchero-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the <em>Falcon<\/em> Ranchero<\/a> through 1965. Then things got a bit strange in Ranchero-Land; <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1966_Ford\/1966-Ford-Falcon-Brochure-Rev\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">the Falcon<\/a> moved to a shortened version of the <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1966_Ford\/1966-Ford-Fairlane-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">midsize Fairlane&#8217;s<\/a> chassis for 1966, with the Ranchero losing the Falcon name but otherwise looking like a Falcon from the front doors forward. For 1967, <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford_Ranchero\/1967-Ford-Ranchero-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the Ranchero became a Fairlane with a pickup bed<\/a>\u2026 but just for that lone year. Here&#8217;s one of those Fairlane Rancheros, found last summer in a car graveyard near Denver (sorry, everyone, it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2012\/12\/auction-to-crusher-12-weeks-in-the-lives-of-two-cars-at-a-self-service-wrecking-yard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">got crushed<\/a> a couple of months ago).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/19134828\/06-1967-Ford-Fairlane-Ranchero-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Named after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.henryfordfairlane.org\/estate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Henry Ford&#8217;s estate in Dearborn<\/a>, the Fa in the United States through 1970 (after which the Torino name took over). Australians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7XNiWg-kRa0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">could buy new Fairlanes<\/a> all the way through 2007.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/19134917\/53-1967-Ford-Fairlane-Ranchero-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>After 1967, the Ranchero <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/Junkyard\/JunkyardGallery-Ford.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">stayed on Ford&#8217;s midsize chassis<\/a> through its discontinuation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/06\/15\/junkyard-gem-1979-ford-ranchero-500\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">in 1979<\/a>, and it never again had to add the badges of another Ford model next to its own.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/19134926\/98-1967-Ford-Fairlane-Ranchero-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The build tag <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpocr.com\/fordvin7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">tells us<\/a> that this car was built in Kansas City, and that it came with a two-barrel 289-cubic-inch (4.7-liter) Windsor V8 from the factory. I should have scraped the primer off this tag to determine the sales office, transmission type, and so on, but I didn&#8217;t realize that information was painted over with gray primer until later.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/19134854\/31-1967-Ford-Fairlane-Ranchero-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This is definitely a Windsor V8 with a two-barrel carburetor, so it might even be the original mill that the lineworkers bolted in back in KC. If so, it was rated at 200 horsepower and 282 pound-feet.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/19134840\/17-1967-Ford-Fairlane-Ranchero-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The body trim in the cab and primer all around suggest that this truckcar was somebody&#8217;s project that never got finished.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/19134831\/07-1967-Ford-Fairlane-Ranchero-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The interior is missing the seats, but doesn&#8217;t look unsalvageable otherwise.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/19134847\/25-1967-Ford-Fairlane-Ranchero-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a34566051\/what-was-the-last-3-on-the-tree-column-shift-manual-car-americans-could-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">three-on-the-tree column-shift manual transmission<\/a> was base equipment in the &#8217;67 Fairlane Ranchero. With the 289, you could upgrade to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/columns\/a34301141\/what-was-the-final-us-market-car-to-get-a-4-speed-manual-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">four-on-the-floor manual<\/a> or a three-speed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cruise-O-Matic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Cruise-O-Matic automatic<\/a>. This one has the automatic.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/19134923\/62-1967-Ford-Fairlane-Ranchero-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s some rust in the usual spots, but it&#8217;s all fixable. I&#8217;m never surprised to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/11\/29\/junkyard-gem-1965-chevrolet-chevelle-malibu-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">1960s Detroit sedans<\/a> in yards like this, because millions were sold and few enthusiasts want to drive a classic four-door today. I will admit that I\u00a0<em>was<\/em> startled to find a mid-to-late-1960s Ranchero in such a place, however, because these machines have a devoted following willing to invest the time and money required to fix one up. Maybe not in Denver!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/19134842\/18-1967-Ford-Fairlane-Ranchero-in-Colorado-junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ranchero purists will be displeased about <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Pontiac\/1964%20Pontiac\/1964-Pontiac-GTO-Brochure\/slides\/1964_Pontiac_GTO-08.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">the &#8217;64 GTO hubcaps<\/a>, but they do look pretty good if you don&#8217;t notice the lettering.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"7qnFf7SeYYI\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<p>Fairlane <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/marketing-advertising\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">advertising<\/a> got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Iz5zZPWHqKg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">pretty lysergic<\/a> around this time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After decades of making plenty of pounds selling coupe utilities Down Under (Australia didn&#8217;t switch\u00a0to the dollar and its futuristic decimalized system\u00a0until 1966), Ford decided to begin selling a modern ute in the United States for the 1957 model year.
