{"id":38982,"date":"2022-12-24T12:03:46","date_gmt":"2022-12-24T17:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=38982"},"modified":"2022-12-24T12:03:46","modified_gmt":"2022-12-24T17:03:46","slug":"junkyard-gem-1965-plymouth-belvedere-race-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=38982","title":{"rendered":"Junkyard Gem: 1965 Plymouth Belvedere Race Car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve found the occasional retired race car during my junkyard travels, but most of them have been <a href=\"https:\/\/24hoursoflemons.com\/blog\/buffs-racing-chevy-cavalier-too-terrible-even-for-lemons-discarded-like-stinky-garbage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">fairly modern machines<\/a>. Today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a> is a different sort of racing remnant: an ancient dirt-track beast that probably last saw service more than 40 years ago, found in <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradoautoandparts.com\/search-inventory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">a Denver-area yard<\/a> last summer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/01120249\/21-1965-Plymouth-Belvedere-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s really just a gutted shell that sat outdoors for decades after its final competition, but you can still catch glimpses of its past here and there among the rust spots and peeling paint.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/01120312\/99-1965-Plymouth-Belvedere-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The rear quarters clearly identify it as a <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Plymouth\/1965%20Plymouth\/1965_Plymouth_Belvedere_Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">1965 Plymouth B-Body<\/a> two-door sedan.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/01120255\/25-1965-Plymouth-Belvedere-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 1965 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allpar.com\/d3\/model\/satellite.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">B-Body Plymouths<\/a> were sold as three models: <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Plymouth\/1965%20Plymouth\/1965_Plymouth_Belvedere_Brochure\/slides\/1965_Plymouth_Belvedere-04-05.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">the upscale Satellite<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Plymouth\/1965%20Plymouth\/1965_Plymouth_Belvedere_Brochure\/slides\/1965_Plymouth_Belvedere-08-09.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">mid-level Belvedere II<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Plymouth\/1965%20Plymouth\/1965_Plymouth_Belvedere_Brochure\/slides\/1965_Plymouth_Belvedere-12-13.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the El Cheapo Belvedere I<\/a>. The shadow of a Belvedere badge on the fender found inside the car indicates that at least the\u00a0<em>fender<\/em> came from a Belvedere I (the way race cars \u2014 especially those that compete on dirt \u2014 whack into each other, we can assume this is the 19th fender affiliated with this car).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/01120300\/27-1965-Plymouth-Belvedere-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Belvedere fenders were easy to find in junkyards until about 40 years ago, and the faded sponsor stickers indicate that this car last raced around that time. You can still buy new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turboaction.com\/valvebody.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">&#8220;Turbo Action&#8221; valve bodies for Chrysler automatic transmissions<\/a>, by the way.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/01120301\/30-1965-Plymouth-Belvedere-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, <a href=\"https:\/\/crcindustries.com.au\/products\/crc-5-56-multi-purpose-lubricant-400g-5005.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">CRC 5-56 lubricant<\/a> still exists. The &#8220;OZONE SAFE&#8221; label on the can suggests that this sticker is of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1975\/06\/22\/archives\/aerosol-feels-the-ozone-effect.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">late-1970s-to-early-1980s<\/a> origin.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/01120240\/13-1965-Plymouth-Belvedere-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/rolls_royce\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">roll<\/a> cage is old-school for sure, particularly the lack of door bars. The Denver area <a href=\"https:\/\/history.denverlibrary.org\/news\/colorado-auto-racing-brief-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">once had many race tracks<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/denver\/print-edition\/2014\/04\/11\/behind-the-list-the-storied-past-of-overland-park.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Overland Park<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/englewoodherald.net\/stories\/englewood-speedway-memories-to-come-racing-back,267729\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Englewood Speedway<\/a> (both very close to this Plymouth&#8217;s final parking space), but they had closed long before the 1980s. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.speedwayandroadracehistory.com\/lakeside-speedway.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">Lakeside Speedway<\/a> was in business\u00a0 until 1988 (and <a href=\"https:\/\/k99.com\/this-is-what-colorados-lakeside-race-track-looks-like-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">still stands today, sort of<\/a>) but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denver7.com\/news\/local-news\/there-was-no-place-like-it-the-rich-history-of-lakeside-speedway-once-known-as-denvers-palace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">that dirt oval hosted mostly midget races<\/a> during its final 30 years of operation. Perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uIm4RvAzROA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Colorado Springs International Speedway<\/a>, which closed in 1985, was this car&#8217;s final race venue.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/01120303\/32-1965-Plymouth-Belvedere-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s one sponsor that suggests an origin far from the Mountain Time Zone. I can&#8217;t make out the company name (other than what might be a snippet including &#8220;oluce&#8221;), but it appears to be an institutional food business in Houma, Lousiana. It&#8217;s possible this car was bought in Louisiana and brought to Front Range Colorado, where it rusted away in a yard or field.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/11\/01120246\/19-1965-Plymouth-Belvedere-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s not much left, but it&#8217;s one of the many types of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/automotive-history\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">automotive history<\/a> I like to document in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">this series<\/a>. One of my all-time favorite road-racing cars is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a15373294\/24-hours-of-lemons-veteran-66-plymouth-belvedere-still-going-strong-this-is-how-you-do-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">a Belvedere<\/a> (no, not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/racing\/nascar\/a1825196\/dream-season-richard-petty-set-nascar-records-1967-will-never-be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\"><em>this<\/em> one<\/a>), so I knew this car&#8217;s final chapter had to be documented.<\/p>\n<p><style><![CDATA[.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }]]><\/style>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\">\n <lite-youtube videoid=\"z_tFl5xRkjY\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<p>There are still some of these cars out there today.
