It\u2019s the smallest, sportiest, and most enthusiast-driven by nature. SUVs like the X3, X5, and X7 are all increasingly more luxurious. The X1 is supposed to be fun. So when it went to tackle the moose test\u2014a sudden 80 km\/h (50 mph) slalom to simulate having to swerve around a moose\u2014you\u2019d think the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2022\/12\/23\/bmw-x1-best-bmw-suv\/\"> BMW X1<\/a> would excel. Except it didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>In this recent moose test from <em>km77,\u00a0<\/em>the BMW X1 was put through its paces and it failed pretty miserably. However, that failure had more to do with the car\u2019s stability control, which limited its ability to put down power and change direction quickly. And that\u2019s fine. Until it isn\u2019t. Life isn\u2019t a closed test environment where dangerous obstacles will only come your way in favorable conditions for your car. A moose, for instance, isn\u2019t going to wait until your speed is sufficiently reduced before it walks into the middle of a snowy road. So you don\u2019t want a stability control system that\u2019s overly sensitive and hampers the car\u2019s ability to swerve if need be.\u00a0You could also turn the stability control off but that\u2019s unsafe in public, so we wouldn\u2019t recommend that in public.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s surprising to see the BMW X1\u2014the smallest, lowest crossover in BMW\u2019s lineup and the one most likely to do well in this test\u2014lack the ability to pass the moose test at its highest speed. BMW is the brand whose cars are supposed to be the ultimate driving machine, why would it build software that limits its car\u2019s ability? Having driven the X1, I know its chassis is plenty capable, so it would be nice to see BMW let it loose a bit.
