As the 1980s progressed, the Datsun 810 <a href=\"http:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/junkyard-treasures\/junkyard-treasure-1984-nissan-maxima\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">became the Nissan Maxima<\/a>, while the Cressida <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/01\/17\/junkyard-gem-1986-toyota-cressida-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">became more sensible<\/a> (i.e., less fun) with each passing year. Here&#8217;s a late <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.nissannews.com\/en-US\/photos\/photo-6780d13b30ae48fa8d1ec74795779bd6-maxima-heritage-a-look-back-at-seven-generations-of-4-door-spor-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/usa.nissannews.com\/en-US\/photos\/photo-6780d13b30ae48fa8d1ec74795779bd6-maxima-heritage-a-look-back-at-seven-generations-of-4-door-spor-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">econd-generation Maxima<\/a>, found in a Colorado self-service yard recently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/06143018\/50-1988-Nissan-Maxima-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Maxima name started out as a trim level designation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a38532590\/1981-datsun-810-maxima-is-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">for the 810<\/a>, then became a model name in its own right just before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Wsu011yOnpk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Datsun became Nissan<\/a> in North America.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/06142958\/28-1988-Nissan-Maxima-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For the 1985 model year, the Maxima switched to front-wheel-drive from rear-wheel drive, while its inline-six L-series engine became a VG-series V6. This one is a slightly detuned version of the 3.0 used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/05\/26\/junkyard-gem-1985-nissan-300zx-turbo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the same-year 300ZX<\/a>, rated at 157 horsepower.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/06142948\/18-1988-Nissan-Maxima-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The base Maxima could still be had with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2015\/05\/junkyard-find-1985-nissan-maxima\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">a five-speed manual transmission<\/a> in 1988, but American sedan buyers had long since fallen out love with three-pedal cars by that time. This one has the four-speed automatic.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/06142955\/26-1988-Nissan-Maxima-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In Japan at the time (and, to a certain extent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/drives\/a2135311\/best-car-world-building-toyota-century\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">today<\/a>), high-quality cloth seats were considered more luxurious than slippery, hot, noisy leather seats. You could get leather in the 1988 Maxima (thereby ruining it in the process, in my opinion), but it cost an extra $785 (which amounts to about $2,022 in 2022 dollars).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/06142950\/21-1988-Nissan-Maxima-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Life without a seven-band graphic equalizer and a cassette deck with faux-brushed-stainless face wasn&#8217;t worth living in 1988, when popular music <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o-YBDTqX_ZU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">had reached its all-time zenith<\/a>. Naturally, the Nissan Voice Warning System was in full effect in this car, though the system had gone solid-state and no longer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/but-wait-theres-more\/a1875076\/when-cars-talked-using-tiny-phonograph-records-nissans-voice-warning-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">used a tiny phonograph record to talk to you<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/06143015\/45-1988-Nissan-Maxima-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Just like Ford at the time (and like Ford today), Nissan offered a digital keypad lock system.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/06142947\/17-1988-Nissan-Maxima-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The odometer shows just 86,540 miles, which is very low for a 34-year-old luxury sedan. Note the double mechanical trip counters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/06142943\/08-1988-Nissan-Maxima-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2012\/12\/what-the-hell-the-japanese-characters-fit-the-switch-just-fine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">SECU-RITY indicator light<\/a> illustrates one of the pitfalls of Japanese-to-English translation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/06143022\/55-1988-Nissan-Maxima-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The automatic-equipped 1988 Maxima&#8217;s MSRP started out at $16,949, though I suspect that this one is the $17,949 SE model. Those prices would be $43,656 and $46,232 in today&#8217;s dollars. The Cressida was $20,250 that year ($52,159); it had one fewer horse beneath the hood but <em>did<\/em> have rear-wheel drive. Meanwhile, you could buy a new Pontiac <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/08\/01\/junkyard-gem-1989-pontiac-6000-ste-awd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">6000 STE and its gratifyingly complex electronics<\/a> for $18,699 ($48,164).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/06143013\/43-1988-Nissan-Maxima-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s some rust, nothing fatal.
