(Image:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/tesla-gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Tesla (Opens PDF)\">Tesla<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution announced plans on Monday to invest KRW 4 trillion (~$3.1 billion) into a factory in Ochang, creating a \u201csmart factory\u201d for producing EV batteries, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslarati.com\/tesla-lg-energy-solution-3-1b-battery-facility-korea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Teslarati (Opens PDF)\"><em>Teslarati<\/em><\/a>. The investment will continue from now until 2026, and will oversee the development of an R&amp;D program, production hardware, infrastructure, and seemingly even plans for volume production of the long-awaited 4680 battery cell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe plan to set up a diversified product portfolio including pouch-type and cylindrical batteries to respond to customer needs in a timely manner and differentiate production capabilities based on a \u2018smart\u2019 factory,\u201d an LG Energy spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>The cylindrical, next-generation <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/628278\/tesla-4680-battery-production-868000week\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22628278%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22tesla-4680-battery-production-868000week%22%7D\">4680 battery cells<\/a> have been in development for years now, and past reports seemed to suggest that LG would be producing the hardware at its Ochang plant. The recent statement echoed claims in February, in which LG said it was hoping to diversify its lineup of cylindrical batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Months later in June, LG announced an investment of KRW 580 billion (~$450 million) to add a 4680 assembly line at its second Ochang plant, featuring a production capacity of 9 GWh. Additionally, the announcement included LG\u2019s plans to increase the production of last-generation 2170 battery cells at its first Ochang plant by 4 GWh.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea has also reportedly been a candidate for Tesla\u2019s next Gigafactory in Asia.
