{"id":39905,"date":"2023-01-09T09:04:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-09T14:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=39905"},"modified":"2023-01-09T09:04:00","modified_gmt":"2023-01-09T14:04:00","slug":"1138376_lightyear-2-ev-teased-with-starting-price-in-40-000-bracket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=39905","title":{"rendered":"Lightyear 2 EV teased with starting price in $40,000 bracket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first model from Lightyear only went into production in December, but the Dutch EV startup has already provided a teasing look at a second, much more attainable model.<\/p>\n<p>The new Lightyear 2 is a compact hatch with an aerodynamic fastback design <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1136138_lightyear-one-solar-car-price\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar to the Lightyear 0<\/a>, Lightyear&#8217;s breakthrough model which costs over $250,000 and whose 0.17 drag coefficient is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1137183_lightyear-0-achieves-record-low-drag-coefficient\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record for a production car<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Lightyear promises a starting price of less than 40,000 euros (approximately $42,750) for the 2, which will be built in much higher numbers than the 0.<\/p>\n<p>Lightyear is holding back most of the details until the 2&#8217;s reveal in the summer, but the company has confirmed the car will feature solar panels and in-wheel hub motors, just like the 0.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100844538_m\" title=\"Lightyear 0\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Lightyear 0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/lightyear-0_100844538_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/lightyear-0_100844538_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/lightyear-0_100844538_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/lightyear-0_100844538_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/lightyear-0_100844538_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/lightyear-0_100844538_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Lightyear 0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>On the larger 0, there&#8217;s roughly 53 square feet of solar panels lining the hood and roof, and with sufficient access to sunlight they can charge at a rate of 1.05 kw, or enough to add 6.2 miles of range in an hour, according to Lightyear.<\/p>\n<p>With help from the sun, Lightyear estimates the 2 will be able to cover a range of almost 500 miles on the WLTP test cycle used outside the U.S. The 0 with its 60-kwh battery was rated at 388 miles on the same WLTP cycle. EPA-rated figures would be lower.<\/p>\n<p>Interested buyers can already join a waitlist for the 2. Production is currently slated to start in late 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Lightyear hasn&#8217;t said whether the 2 will be available in the U.S. The 0, which is assembled in Finland by independent contract manufacturer Valmet, is currently only available in select European markets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first model from Lightyear only went into production in December, but the Dutch EV startup has already provided a teasing look at a second, much more attainable model.
