{"id":39985,"date":"2023-01-10T06:03:51","date_gmt":"2023-01-10T11:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=39985"},"modified":"2023-01-10T06:03:51","modified_gmt":"2023-01-10T11:03:51","slug":"nhtsa-investigates-elon-musk-tweet-steering-wheel-nags","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=39985","title":{"rendered":"NHTSA To Investigate Musk\u2019s Tweet About Disabling Steering Wheel Nags"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An update to Tesla\u2019s Full Self-Driving Beta that would allow users to turn off hands-on-wheel alerts was announced by Elon Musk in a tweet from last week, and some say it will be a welcome addition, but the feds seem to have a different opinion.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>Autoblog<\/em>, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says it asked <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/category\/elon-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Elon Musk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Tesla<\/a>\u2019s CEO, to clarify what he wanted to say with the tweet embedded below.<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-item trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"embed\" data-embed-code=\"%3Cblockquote%20class%3D%22twitter-tweet%22%3E%3Cp%20lang%3D%22en%22%20dir%3D%22ltr%22%3EAgreed%2C%20update%20coming%20in%20Jan%3C%2Fp%3E%26mdash%3B%20Elon%20Musk%20(%40elonmusk)%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Felonmusk%2Fstatus%2F1609313412131037193%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%22%3EDecember%2031%2C%202022%3C%2Fa%3E%3C%2Fblockquote%3E%20%3Cscript%20async%20src%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Fplatform.twitter.com%2Fwidgets.js%22%20charset%3D%22utf-8%22%3E%3C%2Fscript%3E%20\">\u00a0<\/section>\n<p>The agency added that this matter is now part of a broader investigation it\u2019s conducting, which includes at least 14 Teslas that have crashed into emergency vehicles while using the Autopilot driver assistance system.<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s tweet refers to the steering wheel nags that the car issues when it feels the driver isn\u2019t paying attention, doesn\u2019t have his hands on the steering wheel, or when it can\u2019t manage a certain traffic situation and asks the driver to take over control.<\/p>\n<p>In the tweet thread, Musks responded to a couple of users that said drivers with more than 10,000 miles driven with FSD activated and Tesla Vision installed (this is Tesla\u2019s camera that checks if the driver is paying attention to the road) should be able to disable the prompts, to which Tesla\u2019s CEO replied, \u201cagreed, update coming in Jan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/628930\/tesla-fsd-update-steering-wheel-nags\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22628930%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22tesla-fsd-update-steering-wheel-nags%22%7D\">We reported on this story at the beginning of January<\/a>, when we mentioned that the upcoming update is likely to trigger the attention of traffic safety advocates and regulators, and now the NHTSA is including this particular tweet in its investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla\u2019s Full Self-Driving pack costs $15,000 and although it says what it should do in the name, the company\u2019s official website mentions that it still requires \u201cactive driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous.\u201d This ambiguity in terms, as well as several accidents, prompted the NHTSA to start an official investigation in August 2021, which is now proceeding \u201creally fast,\u201d according to a report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/us-agency-working-really-fast-nhtsa-autopilot-probe-2023-01-09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> that quotes the agency\u2019s acting head.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s your take on this situation?
