{"id":40373,"date":"2023-01-13T19:22:32","date_gmt":"2023-01-14T00:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=40373"},"modified":"2023-01-13T19:22:32","modified_gmt":"2023-01-14T00:22:32","slug":"chinese-solar-firm-to-open-a-us-factory-a-manufacturing-win-for-biden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=40373","title":{"rendered":"Chinese solar firm to open a US factory \u2013 a manufacturing win for Biden"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"img-border featured-image\">\n\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"skip-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/solar-panel-array-power-sun-electricity-159397.jpeg?quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/solar-panel-array-power-sun-electricity-159397.jpeg?w=320&amp;quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;ssl=1 320w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/solar-panel-array-power-sun-electricity-159397.jpeg?w=640&amp;quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/solar-panel-array-power-sun-electricity-159397.jpeg?w=1024&amp;quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/solar-panel-array-power-sun-electricity-159397.jpeg?w=1500&amp;quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;ssl=1 1500w\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" alt=\"Chinese solar\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><br \/>\n\t<\/figure>\n<p>China\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jasolar.com\/html\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JA Solar<\/a>, the world\u2019s fourth-largest solar panel maker by capacity, is going to open its first factory in the US \u2013 a major win for the Biden administration, which has created a domestic clean energy manufacturing growth boom with laws passed late last year.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-276886\"\/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle author_ad ad-container adsbygoogle author_ad hide-lg author-in-content\" data-ad-host=\"ca-host-pub-5506057612223327\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9817249230503449\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Beijing-headquartered JA Solar\u00a0has leased space in Phoenix to manufacture photovoltaic products \u2013 a $60 million investment. <\/p>\n<p>The Arizona Commerce Authority said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcommerce.com\/news-events\/news\/2023\/1\/ja-solar-announces-first-us-solar-module-manufacturing-facility-in-phoenix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in an announcement<\/a> that the facility is expected to be operational by fourth quarter 2023, and that the new US plant will create more than 600 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>JA Solar says it will use \u201chighly automated assembly lines to produce high-efficiency solar panels (PV modules) for commercial and residential rooftop applications, as well as for utility-scale solar power plant deployment.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Once it\u2019s fully up and running, the Phoenix factory will have an annual production capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW). <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-electrek-s-take\">Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s been a very good week for US solar manufacturing announcements: Seoul-headquartered Qcells announced on January 11 that it\u2019s going to manufacture 3.3 GW of solar ingots, wafers, cells, and finished panels in Bartow County, Georgia. It will also assemble an additional 2 GW of solar panels at its Dalton, Georgia, facility \u2013 the largest solar panel manufacturing plant in the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>Add to that the announcement by First Solar in November 2022 that it\u2019s going to open a fourth PV solar module factory in Alabama by 2025 with a planned annual capacity of 3.5 GW.<\/p>\n<p>To put it all in perspective [via <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-11\/china-solar-firm-plans-us-factory-in-boon-for-biden-energy-push\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/em>], \u201cThe US currently has 4.5 gigawatts of annual silicon panel production capacity, according to BloombergNEF data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So just these three projects alone \u2013 and there are more \u2013 more than double the United States\u2019 current annual solar production capacity.<\/p>\n<p>I also reported this week that China\u2019s Trina Solar is going to open a factory in Vietnam in order to comply with US trade laws.
