The company thrived through World War II\u2014helping to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbth.com\/history\/333156-how-us-studebaker-became-soviet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">win the war for the Allies<\/a> in the process\u2014and for a few years after, but then struggled when <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">GM<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Ford<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chrysler\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Chrysler<\/a> began to crush smaller American manufacturers with their increasingly sophisticated (yet affordable) products. Still, the storied company from South Bend, Ind., wasn&#8217;t giving up on the pickup market, even as the walls closed in, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hemmings.com\/stories\/2022\/07\/05\/a-look-at-studebakers-last-trucks-1960-64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">a new generation of Studebaker pickups<\/a> hit showrooms for the 1960 model year. This was <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Studebaker\/1961%20Studebaker\/1961-Studebaker-Champ-Trucks-Specs\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">the Champ<\/a>, and I&#8217;ve found one of these <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">trucks<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/andersensales.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">a northeastern Colorado self-service boneyard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/18111140\/26-1963-Studebaker-Champ-pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Studebaker pickups had been using <a href=\"https:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/junkyard-treasures\/junkyard-treasure-1949-studebaker-2r-stakebed-truck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the same cab design<\/a> since the late 1940s, and that cab looked mighty dated as the 1960s dawned, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/science\/f-satellites.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">space exploration boomed<\/a>, and thermonuclear weapons <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YtCTzbh4mNQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">reached the 50 megaton threshold<\/a>. Studebaker, having merged with <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/packard\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Packard<\/a> in 1954, didn&#8217;t have the money to design a new cab from scratch, but the front half of <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Studebaker\/1960%20Studebaker\/1960_Studebaker_Lark_Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">the Lark<\/a> was the right size to fit Studebaker&#8217;s truck frame. With a bit of cutting and pasting, a Lark-based pickup cab was developed and it looked pretty good.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/18111125\/05-1963-Studebaker-Champ-pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In fact, the new Champs looked every bit as modern as their <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford%20Motor%20Company%20Trucks-Vans\/1960-Trucks\/1960-Ford-Trucks-Full-Line-Folder\/slides\/1960_Ford_Trucks_Full_Line_Folder-01.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">rivals from Ford<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2015\/10\/junkyard-find-1960-dodge-d200-pickup-genuine-flathead-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">Chrysler<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/10\/02\/junkyard-gem-1964-chevrolet-c20-fleetside-pickup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">GM<\/a>. The cheapest possible 1960 Champ pickup started at $1,875 (about $19,051 in 2022 dollars). <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/dodge\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Dodge<\/a> could put you in its most affordable pickup for $1,812 ($18,411) that year, while a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/chevrolet\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">Chevy pickup<\/a> started at $1,991 ($20,230). The least expensive &#8217;60 Ford Flareside was $1,956 ($19,875).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/18111135\/18-1963-Studebaker-Champ-pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For 1962, the price tag of the half-ton Champ started at $1,870 (about $19,001 today).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/18111146\/36-1963-Studebaker-Champ-pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This one has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/autohistorian\/4083962296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">the Spaceside bed<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/barnfinds.com\/the-champ-1962-studebaker-champ-spaceside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">allegedly<\/a> made using Dodge tooling bought from Chrysler. Sure <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-fastly.thetruthaboutcars.com\/media\/2022\/07\/19\/9241188\/junkyard-find-1960-dodge-d200-pickup-with-genuine-flathead-power.jpg?size=720x845&amp;nocrop=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">looks similar<\/a>! Studebaker made a little money go a long way in the early 1960s, out of necessity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/18111130\/10-1963-Studebaker-Champ-pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1713546\/what-was-final-year-new-flathead-powered-american-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">Flathead engines were\u00a0<em>seriously<\/em> obsolete by the 1960s<\/a>, and so it was good news when Studebaker finally offered an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hemmings.com\/stories\/article\/quality-by-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">overhead-valve straight-six<\/a> in the Champ for the 1961 model year (Chrysler continued selling some Dodge trucks with flatheads fairly deep into the decade, though most of the later ones were military-only).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/18111133\/13-1963-Studebaker-Champ-pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This is a 170-cubic-inch (2.8-liter) plant based on Studebaker&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Studebaker\/1932-Studebaker\/1932-Studebaker-Brochure\/slides\/1932_Studebaker-16.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">venerable flathead design<\/a>, rated at 110 horsepower and 156 pound-feet. A Studebaker 289-cubic-inch V8 was available as an option. Various transmissions were available, including a <a href=\"http:\/\/studebakerflightomatic.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">&#8220;Flightomatic&#8221; automatic<\/a>; this truck came with the base <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a34566051\/what-was-the-last-3-on-the-tree-column-shift-manual-car-americans-could-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">three-on-the-tree column-shift manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/18111150\/41-1963-Studebaker-Champ-pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bringatrailer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/159477716171ce3c1606215bc7eF9E95931-2AA0-476C-96A4-BDA9A1775400.jpeg?fit=1280%2C958\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">decorative speaker grille<\/a> is gone, but the original AM radio speaker remains. Imagine taking <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Route_36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\">U.S. Route 36<\/a> from Denver all the way to Indianapolis with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Route_36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:31;\">Hank Snow&#8217;s latest hit<\/a> buzzing out of this speaker every half-hour!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/18111126\/07-1963-Studebaker-Champ-pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Pickups of this era didn&#8217;t go in for fancy switches or instrumentation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/18111147\/37-1963-Studebaker-Champ-pickup-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I still find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/Junkyard\/JunkyardGallery-Studebaker.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:32;\">the occasional discarded Studebaker<\/a> during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:33;\">my junkyard travels<\/a>, but Studebaker was on the ropes, financially speaking, by the 1960s so its vehicles from the final years are rare. 1964 was the last year for the Champ (and for all U.S.-built Studebakers, for that matter). Studebaker car production <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Studebaker\/1966%20Studebaker\/1966-Studebaker-Full-Line-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:34;\">continued in Canada into 1966<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"J3o7e_5lk5w\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<p>It appears that Studebaker didn&#8217;t do a lot of TV <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/marketing-advertising\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:35;\">advertising<\/a> for the Champ, so here&#8217;s a &#8217;62 Lark commercial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With a wagon-building history stretching back to the middle 1700s, the Studebaker Corporation began building gasoline-engine-powered delivery trucks starting in 1911.
