At first, we just got <a href=\"https:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/junkyard-treasures\/junkyard-treasure-1984-isuzu-i-mark-sedan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">I-Mark subcompacts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/08\/07\/junkyard-gem-1984-isuzu-pup-longbed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">P&#8217;up pickups.<\/a> Then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/09\/09\/junkyard-gem-1996-isuzu-trooper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the Trooper SUV<\/a> appeared in 1984, and Isuzu joined the suburban-commuter <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">truck<\/a> game in a big way. For the 1989 model year, the little <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/isuzu\/amigo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Amigo<\/a> three-door convertible SUV landed on our shores. Here&#8217;s one of those early trucks, found in still-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/02\/16\/rad-for-sale-auction-site-launches-march-1st\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">rad<\/a> condition in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service yard recently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/26143112\/14-1992-Isuzu-Amigo-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Once Isuzu made a version with five doors and a solid roof, giving it <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/isuzu\/rodeo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Rodeo<\/a> badges in the process, the Amigo became more of an afterthought in the North American Isuzu world. Amigo sales halted here after 1995, then resumed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2000-Isuzu-Amigo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">for 1998-2000<\/a> (after which the three-door became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2001-Isuzu-Rodeo+Sport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">the Rodeo Sport<\/a> before disappearing in 2003).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/26143137\/39-1992-Isuzu-Amigo-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Starting in 1996, Isuzu replaced its Amigo-platform-related pickup with a rebadged <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/s_10\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Chevy S-10<\/a> known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2019\/06\/junkyard-find-1996-isuzu-hombre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">the Hombre<\/a>. That meant that Spanish-speaking Isuzu shoppers could be disturbed by the prospect of buying a <em>friend<\/em> or a\u00a0<em>man<\/em>. The Isuzu company itself was named after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isuzu_River\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">a river in Mie Prefecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/26143130\/30-1992-Isuzu-Amigo-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/cars\/down-on-the-junkyard\/junkyard-find-1988-suzuki-samurai-44496830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">Suzuki Samurai<\/a> kicked off the &#8220;cute-ute&#8221; craze for the 1986 model year, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/07\/17\/junkyard-gem-1990-suzuki-sidekick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">the Suzuki Sidekick<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2018\/09\/junkyard-treasure-1993-geo-tracker-illinois-rust-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Geo Tracker<\/a> appearing in 1989. Around the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/05\/07\/junkyard-gem-1990-chevrolet-beretta-indy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">irritating pastel colors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/02\/05\/junkyard-gem-1995-mercury-tracer-trio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">squiggly graphics<\/a> became trendy. This \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a1875866\/1980s-pioneer-auto-earotica-car-stereo-ads-score-high-creepy-o-meter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">other unfortunate 1980s fashions <\/a>\u2014 continued well into the 1990s (<em>One man&#8217;s &#8220;irritating&#8221; and &#8220;unfortunate&#8221; is another&#8217;s &#8220;delightful&#8221; &#8211; Ed<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/26143106\/08-1992-Isuzu-Amigo-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This odometer\u00a0<em>can&#8217;t<\/em> be right! I suspect a broken speedometer cable.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/26143119\/22-1992-Isuzu-Amigo-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The engine is a 2.6-liter inline-four rated at 119 horsepower.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/26143122\/24-1992-Isuzu-Amigo-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Unlike <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/honda\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">Honda&#8217;s<\/a> VTEC, the variable-cam-timing system that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3zJHiyi_ER0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">made its debut in the 1989 Honda Integra<\/a>, Isuzu&#8217;s I-TEC name just stood for an electronic fuel injection system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/26143111\/13-1992-Isuzu-Amigo-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The only transmission in the Amigo for the first couple of years was a five-speed manual, which is in this truck. That three-pedal setup kept the Amigo&#8217;s appeal limited to the small group of American drivers willing to work a clutch. The optional automatic became available for 1992. You could get the Amigo with four-wheel drive, but this one is the cheaper rear-wheel-drive version.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/26143127\/27-1992-Isuzu-Amigo-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This interior looks so nice that perhaps this Amigo really\u00a0<em>did<\/em> get junked with 57,000+ on the odometer. Checking the California BAR&#8217;s Vehicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bar.ca.gov\/services\/vehicle\/pubtstqry.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">Smog Check history<\/a> (by plugging in the VIN), I see that it last took \u2014 and passed \u2014 a smog check in 2010. Perhaps something broke at age 18 and it sat in a garage until its last owner finally gave up on it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/26143125\/26-1992-Isuzu-Amigo-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Which is too bad, because this little truck would have been a hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/09\/01\/2021-radwood-chicago-photo-gallery-1980s-1990s-cars-trucks-vans-wagons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">at Radwood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"YDMugdQxF8I\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<p>This commercial is for the second-generation Amigo, but it&#8217;s a must-see due to the homage to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0I-Ad1QDB-I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">the old Slinky ads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"YkBFk6p9WaI\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<p>Because just about every Isuzu (and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/daewoo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">Daewoo<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/suzuki\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">Suzuki<\/a>, for that matter) was sold under different names elsewhere in the sprawling <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\">GM<\/a> Empire of the 1990s, here&#8217;s a commercial for the German-market <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/opel\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:31;\">Opel<\/a> Frontera.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After some success providing General Motors with small Faster pickups badged as Chevrolet LUVs in North America (plus some Chevette-related Geminis labeled &#8220;Buick\/Opel by Isuzu,&#8221; which confused everybody), Isuzu began selling vehicles under its own name here in the early 1980s.
