The automaker was already selling cars at that time, having launched the 356 in 1948, but with only Porsche lettering to identify them.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In March 1951, the company launched a design competition among German art academies, offering 1,000 deutsche marks to the winner. None of the designs won over company judges, however.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100841444_m\" title=\"Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-718-cayman-gt4-eperformance_100841444_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/porsche-718-cayman-gt4-eperformance_100841444_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-718-cayman-gt4-eperformance_100841444_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-718-cayman-gt4-eperformance_100841444_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/porsche-718-cayman-gt4-eperformance_100841444_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/porsche-718-cayman-gt4-eperformance_100841444_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The idea of a logo surfaced again later in 1951 when Ferry Porsche, son of company founder Ferdinand, met U.S. importer Max Hoffman for a business dinner in New York City, where Hoffman had a large showroom.<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman had recently accepted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1043757_porsche-celebrates-70-years-in-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first Porsche franchise in America<\/a> and was an influential presence, also brining the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1097352_this-briggs-cunningham-owned-mercedes-300sl-was-the-first-of-the-gullwings-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercedes-Benz 300 SL<\/a> to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman pushed for a distinctive logo, and this time the idea stuck. On December 27, 1951, Ferry Porsche jotted down notes for a &#8220;steering wheel hub featuring Porsche and the Stuttgart coat of arms or something similar.&#8221; After returning to Germany, he commissioned designer Franz Xaver Reimspie\u00df to design what became the Porsche crest.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100871702_m\" title=\"Porsche crest evolution\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Porsche crest evolution\" width=\"640\" height=\"384\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"614\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-crest-evolution_100871702_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/porsche-crest-evolution_100871702_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-crest-evolution_100871702_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-crest-evolution_100871702_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/porsche-crest-evolution_100871702_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/porsche-crest-evolution_100871702_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Porsche crest evolution<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>He came up with a rearing horse in gold shield modeled on the Stuttgart coat of arms, representing Porsche&#8217;s hometown, with a background based on the coat of arms of W\u00fcrttemberg-Hohenzollern, the West German state which Stuttgart was a part of at the time. It was merged into the newly created state of Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg in 1952, just as the Porsche crest debuted.<\/p>\n<p>Porsche initially used the crest solely on the steering wheel of the 356, adding it to the hood in 1954 and the hub caps in 1959.
