Volkswagen has stopped putting heat pumps in the US-made ID.4 electric crossover since late December 2022, due to the semiconductor shortage that still affects some car manufacturers.<\/p>\n

The news comes via Drive Tesla Canada<\/em>, which got an email from a reader saying that Volkswagen<\/a> told him his yet-to-be-delivered ID.4<\/a> won\u2019t have the heat pump he ordered. An important mention here is that only Canada-bound vehicles are affected by this change, as the ID.4 isn’t available with a heat pump in the US.<\/p>\n

A company spokesperson confirmed the information and added that VW doesn\u2019t know when the shortage will end and when it will be able to add heat pumps back into production at its factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee.<\/p>\n

This report comes just a few days after Audi announced it won\u2019t ship any more Q4 e-trons with heat pumps<\/a> because of supply chain issues. The German automaker sent an email to reservation holders stating that from February onwards all Q4s will have resistive heaters instead of heat pumps.<\/p>\n

In the case of the Volkswagen ID.4, the heat pump is an optional feature on the Canadian market, so those who ordered it won\u2019t get their money back, but they will get a lower final invoice which should reflect the removal of this feature, which will be replaced by a cheaper, conventional resistive heater.<\/p>\n

In the United States, when trying to order a new ID.4 on VW\u2019s official website, the carmaker greets potential customers with a warning that some features aren\u2019t available due to global supply issues: \u201cWe\u2019re sorry, availability of some equipment, options or features may be limited due to global supply issues affecting the auto industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Furthermore, one can\u2019t actually reserve a new ID.4, according to the online configurator<\/a>: \u201cWe are no longer accepting new reservations for the ID.4. Please utilize our inventory tool to locate and purchase an ID.4 from your preferred VW dealer.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a starting price of $47,795, the electric crossover was sold in 20,511 units<\/a> last year in the United States \u2013 an increase of 22.5 percent over 2021, when VW sold 16,742 ID.4s in the US.<\/p>\n
