He is not doing anything. The car is driving itself.<\/p>\n<p>As &#8220;Paint It, Black&#8221; by the Rolling Stones plays in the background, the car maneuvers through city roads, highways, and parking lots. Here and there, a man&#8217;s hands appear, gently cupping the bottom of the steering wheel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But that video was partially staged, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/tesla-video-promoting-self-driving-was-staged-engineer-testifies-2023-01-17\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">according<\/a> to a new report from Reuters. Moments where the car stops at a red light and accelerates at a green light reflect capabilities the vehicle didn&#8217;t have.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters&#8217; report is based on a transcript from Ashok Elluswamy, the director of Autopilot software at Tesla, who was questioned in a deposition in July 2022 that&#8217;s being used as evidence in a lawsuit against Tesla for a lethal car crash involving a former Apple engineer in 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/tesla-video-promoting-self-driving-was-staged-engineer-testifies-2023-01-17\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">according<\/a> to Reuters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Tesla&#8217;s technology can help with things like <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/brakes\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">braking<\/a>, steering, and lane changes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/en_eu\/support\/autopilot\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">according<\/a> to the company&#8217;s website, &#8220;the currently enabled features do not make the vehicle autonomous.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Musk, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/789019145853513729?lang=en\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">posted<\/a> that video on Twitter in 2016 as evidence that Tesla could drive itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The video used &#8220;3D mapping&#8221; \u2014 a way of creating three dimensional views of objects \u2014 on a predetermined route from a house in Menlo Park, California, to the company&#8217;s headquarters in Palo Alto, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/tesla-video-promoting-self-driving-was-staged-engineer-testifies-2023-01-17\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">reported<\/a> citing Elluswamy&#8217;s comments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The intent of the video was not to accurately portray what was available for customers in 2016. It was to portray what was possible to build into the system,&#8221; Elluswamy said in a transcript that was seen by Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>In footage that didn&#8217;t make it into the final video, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/10\/26\/tesla-criminal-investigation-doj-autopilot-self-driving\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">according<\/a> to <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\" rel=\"noopener\">TechCrunch<\/a>, the test car crashed into a fence in Tesla&#8217;s parking lot, Elluswamy said in his deposition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/tesla-video-promoting-self-driving-was-staged-engineer-testifies-2023-01-17\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">according<\/a> to Reuters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has come under increasing criticism and regulatory scrutiny for its autopilot systems recently.
