Enthusiasts who would rather see it under a coupe&#8217;s long hood aren&#8217;t entirely out of luck, but the Japanese company clarified that a Wankel-powered <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/performance\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">sports car<\/a> isn&#8217;t in the cards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rotary is our symbol. It&#8217;s a dream of engineers at Mazda to have a sports car with [a] rotary. Now is not the time for that,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-news\/new-cars\/rotary-sports-car-dream-says-mazda-powertrain-boss\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">explained<\/a> Yoshiaki Noguchi, the assistant manager of Mazda&#8217;s powertrain development division, in an interview with British magazine <em>Autocar<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t sound like the engineering team&#8217;s dream will come true in the near future. Noguchi clarified that Mazda&#8217;s current priority is to electrify the core members of its range in the coming years \u2014 it&#8217;s investing in electric and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hybrid\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">hybrid<\/a> technology. When that&#8217;s done, the firm&#8217;s executives will reconsider whether to launch a long-awaited successor to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/09\/07\/used-mazda-rx-8-listings\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">the rotary-powered RX-8<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2012\/04\/27\/reprieve-end-of-mazda-rx-8-pushed-back-by-extra-1-000-units\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">went out of production in 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While that&#8217;s not a &#8220;heck yes,&#8221; it&#8217;s also not a &#8220;heck no,&#8221; and this marks an important shift in Mazda&#8217;s thinking \u2014 remember, former Mazda CEO Masamichi Kogai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/12\/07\/mazda-no-plans-rx-9-rotary-development\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">ruled out<\/a> a sports car bigger than the Miata in 2016. However, without a firm commitment to the sports car segment, it&#8217;s difficult to accurately predict what a born-again Wankel-powered coupe will look like. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2015\/10\/27\/mazda-rx-vision-concept-rotary-official\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">The RX-Vision concept<\/a> (pictured) presented in 2015 was gorgeous, and it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/08\/06\/mazda-sports-coupe-development-revealed-in-patent-filings\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">appeared in patent filings in 2021<\/a>, but it&#8217;s approaching its 10th birthday and it&#8217;s very unlikely to reach production as-is.<\/p>\n<p>Another point that&#8217;s up in the air is the type of fuel that a hypothetical rotary-powered sports car would be powered by. Gasoline immediately comes to mind, but an unverified report published in 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/08\/16\/mazda-hydrogen-burning-rotary-engine\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">claimed<\/a> that Mazda engineers were developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/01\/13\/mazda-rotary-green-history-hydrogen-hybrid\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">hydrogen-burning rotary engine<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mazda brought the rotary engine back with a whimper by using it as a range extender in the MX-30.
