US passenger vehicles fell in 2022, but the number of EVs went up by a remarkable 65 percent, an increase of almost two thirds compared to 2021.<\/p>\n<p>EVs accounted for 5.8 percent of all new cars sold in the US, an increase from 3.1 percent the year before.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Tesla<\/a> lost ground last year, with a market share that dropped from 72 percent in 2021 to 65 percent in 2022. It\u2019s still the biggest player, but this drop does show that competitors\u2019 ever more compelling models are affecting its dominance of the US EV segment.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers like <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/mercedes-benz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Mercedes-Benz<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/bmw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">BMW<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/ford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Ford<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/cadillac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Cadillac<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/hyundai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Hyundai<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/kia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Kia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/genesis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Genesis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/nissan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\">Nissan<\/a> and other major names launched bespoke EVs in 2022 and they all have their draws.<\/p>\n<p>As per data from Motor Intelligence, in second place for market share after Tesla last year was Ford, with a 7.6 percent share, followed by Hyundai and Kia combined with 7.1 percent. Rivian delivered <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/629288\/rivian-ev-production-deliveries-2022q4\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22629288%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22rivian-ev-production-deliveries-2022q4%22%7D\">a still pretty impressive 20,332 vehicles<\/a> (24,337 produced), while <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/630849\/lucid-air-deliveries-2022q4\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22630849%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22lucid-air-deliveries-2022q4%22%7D\">Lucid delivered 4,369 Air sedans<\/a> (although it does say it built 7,180 units in total, exceeding expectations).<\/p>\n<p>Projections say the number of electric vehicles sold in the US will surpass the 1-million mark <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/features\/628851\/electric-vehicles-coming-2023-usa\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22628851%22%2C%22section%22%3A%223%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22electric-vehicles-coming-2023-usa%22%7D\">in 2023<\/a>. And keep in mind this will be sales of mostly expensive vehicles as the selection of affordable EVs won\u2019t dramatically increase this year.<\/p>\n<p>The average price of an EV sold in the US last year was $61,448, a 5.5 percent decrease compared to 2021.
