Rideshare cars will ideally have lower top speeds to reduce costs, as well as passenger seats that face each other to promote conversations. Delivery vehicles, meanwhile, might have two or three wheels (to help navigate city streets) but loads of trunk space.<\/p>\n<p>Khosrowshahi didn&#8217;t say which automakers were involved, or provide a timeline for when optimized EVs might be ready. Uber said in 2021 that it was partnering with Arrival on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/uber-arrival-custom-ev-taxis-094528261.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">custom electric taxis<\/a>, but that was before the startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ev-startup-arrival-to-refocus-business-on-electric-vans-for-the-us-market-183335281.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">scrapped its automotive projects<\/a> in favor of vans.<\/p>\n<p>Uber is no stranger to promoting electrified rides. The company launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/uber-green-us-climate-change-impact-162446386.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Uber Green<\/a> years ago, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/uber-green-earth-day-151017601.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">lowered prices<\/a> last spring. More recently, it expanded the option of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/uber-now-offers-ev-rides-in-25-cities-124542727.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">hailing all-electric rides<\/a> to two dozen US cities. The company has also made EVs more accessible to some drivers by making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/uber-rents-tesla-evs-to-drivers-131556170.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Tesla<\/a> and Polestar cars available to rent through a deal with Hertz. This latest effort could further widen access by lowering the price of entry and speeding up deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>The service is under pressure to transition to EVs quickly. Internally, it plans to go pure-electric in some regions by 2030, and in cities like London by 2025. Governments in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/eu-member-countries-agree-ban-sale-of-gas-powered-cars-2035-140035763.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Europe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2020-02-04-uk-ban-petrol-diesel-hybrid-cars-2035.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">the UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ny-joins-ca-in-making-all-auto-sales-either-hybrid-or-ev-by-2035-075733173.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">North America<\/a> will also ban sales of combustion engine cars as early as 2035.
