{"id":41139,"date":"2023-01-25T00:03:46","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T05:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=41139"},"modified":"2023-01-25T00:03:46","modified_gmt":"2023-01-25T05:03:46","slug":"junkyard-gem-1988-hyundai-gl-sedan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=41139","title":{"rendered":"Junkyard Gem: 1988 Hyundai Excel GL Sedan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a1871256\/old-35mm-negatives-provide-time-capsule-look-1990-southern-california-student\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">going to college in Southern California<\/a> in 1986, driving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1857121\/1985-mercury-cyclone-worst-best-pizza-delivery-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">an affordable Detroit hooptie<\/a> like most of my peers (because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=80WyBxo0Hto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">only a nobody walked<\/a>), when I noticed a strange thing in the campus parking lots: plenty of <em>brand-new cars!<\/em> More specifically, incredibly affordable brand-new cars from two manufacturers nobody had ever heard of: Yugo and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hyundai\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Hyundai<\/a>. As we all know, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2010\/03\/22\/book-review-the-yugo-the-rise-and-fall-of-the-worst-car-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Malcolm Bricklin&#8217;s Yugo GV<\/a> went on to become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/06\/13\/yugo-american-enthusiasts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">a big joke<\/a>, the country that produced it <a href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/milestones\/1989-1992\/breakup-yugoslavia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">disappeared from world maps<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/iwpr.net\/global-voices\/death-yugo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">its assembly plant was bombed out of existence<\/a> \u2026 but Hyundai became a huge player in the American market. Here&#8217;s one of the cars that first made <span title=\"Korean-language text\"><span lang=\"ko-Hang\">\ud604\ub300\uc790\ub3d9\ucc28\uadf8\ub8f9 a household name here, found in a Denver-area car graveyard recently.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/15112753\/09-1988-Hyundai-Excel-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Yugo GV was hilariously cheap, with a price tag of just $4,199 for the base three-door hatchback in 1988 (that&#8217;s about $10,805 in 2022 dollars, or nearly three grand less than you&#8217;d pay for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevrolet.com\/cars\/spark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">the cheapest new car in America today<\/a>). But the much bigger and better-equipped 1988 Hyundai Excel started at a mere $5,295 ($13,625 now).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/15112752\/04-1988-Hyundai-Excel-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That was\u00a0<em>unbelievably\u00a0<\/em><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/10k_15k\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">cheap for a new car<\/a> that challenged the likes of the $5,495 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/08\/25\/junkyard-gem-1986-chevrolet-sprint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Chevrolet Sprint<\/a>, $5,999 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/03\/14\/junkyard-gem-1986-mazda-323-dx-hatchback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Mazda 323<\/a>, $5,556 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/01\/23\/junkyard-gem-1992-subaru-justy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Subaru Justy<\/a>, $5,899 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/08\/27\/junkyard-gem-1989-plymouth-colt\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Dodge\/Plymouth Colt<\/a>, $5,995 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/01\/02\/junkyard-gem-1988-dodge-omni-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Dodge Omni<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a35638752\/loaded-1987-plymouth-horizon-is-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">Plymouth Horizon<\/a>, $5,948 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2013\/04\/junkyard-find-1988-toyota-tercel-ez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">Toyota Tercel EZ<\/a>, $5,490 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/09\/25\/junkyard-gem-1988-ford-festiva-lx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">Ford Festiva<\/a> and $5,990 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2019\/02\/junkyard-find-1987-volkswagen-fox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Volkswagen Fox<\/a> for supremacy in the under-$6,000 range (six grand comes to about $15,439 after inflation). The Yugo, Sprint, Justy, and Festiva were itsy-bitsy pretend cars, not suitable for jousting with battered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/12\/27\/junkyard-gem-1975-plymouth-fury-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Plymouth Furies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/02\/27\/junkyard-gem-1977-lincoln-continental-mark-v\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">Lincoln Mark V<\/a>s on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interstate-guide.com\/i-405-ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">the 405<\/a>, so the Excel looked like by far the best car-per-dollar deal of mid-to-late-1980s America.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/15112826\/52-1988-Hyundai-Excel-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That said, a few decades of hindsight tells us that the early Excel wasn&#8217;t screwed together so well. Hyundai build quality has been solid since since at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/02\/07\/junkyard-gem-1997-hyundai-accent-gt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">the middle 1990s<\/a>, but the early Excels tended to fall apart in a hurry. I recall visiting California junkyards in the early 1990s and being startled to find still-shiny Excels with under 30,000 miles on their odometers next to the decayed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/12\/21\/junkyard-gem-1971-vw-super-beetle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">Super Beetles<\/a> and rage-junked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a34707853\/1986-renault-alliance-is-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">Renault Alliances<\/a>. If I got time-machined back to 1988 under orders to buy a sub-$6k <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/research\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">new car<\/a> that had a good shot at lasting at least a quarter-century, I&#8217;d get the Tercel EZ or <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/bmw\/323\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">323<\/a> (and then do all the maintenance on the dot).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/15112821\/46-1988-Hyundai-Excel-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This being an automatic-equipped sedan with the one-notch-above-base GL trim level, its MSRP was well above the $6k threshold: $7,145 ($18,385 in 2022). That&#8217;s still\u00a0<em>way<\/em> cheaper than an &#8217;88 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/corolla\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">Corolla<\/a> or <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/honda\/civic\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">Civic<\/a> sedan with slushbox ($9,358 and $9,655, respectively), and the Excel&#8217;s specs looked somewhat similar to those of the Corolla and Civic.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/15112808\/26-1988-Hyundai-Excel-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The engine is a Mitsubishi-derived four-cylinder rated at 68 horsepower. Smart Excel owners avoided drag races with anything quicker than Yugos and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1877791\/introduction-volkswagen-diesel-misery-driver-training-class-1982\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">diesel Volkswagens<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/15112757\/16-1988-Hyundai-Excel-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The automatic transmission added a stiff $450 ($1,158 now) to the cost of this car. American drivers loved automatics nearly as much in 1988 as they do now, but two-pedal rigs were costly and Excels were bought on price, so most of them had the base <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a37089195\/what-will-be-the-last-new-car-with-a-five-speed-manual\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\">five-speed manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/15124813\/00-1990-Mitsubishi-Precis-in-Colorado-wrecking-yard-photograph-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, there was a Mitsubishi-badged twin of the Excel sold in the United States: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/05\/30\/junkyard-gem-1990-mitsubishi-precis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:31;\">the Precis<\/a>. Starting price was $5,295 for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2016\/05\/junkyard-find-1988-mitsubishi-precis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:32;\">&#8217;88 Precis<\/a> hatchback, same as the Excel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2020\/05\/19103843\/49-1989-Hyundai-Excel-GL-in-Colorado-Junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Not even 100,000 miles on the clock. Since most Excels died fairly young, they&#8217;re difficult to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/Junkyard\/JunkyardGallery-Hyundai.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:33;\">find in the boneyards<\/a> today. I suspect that this one was a just-to-church-on-Sundays car that got regular maintenance from its one owner. Amazingly, I&#8217;ve found <a href=\"http:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/junkyard-treasures\/junkyard-treasure-1986-hyundai-excel-gl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:34;\">a junkyard Excel with close to a quarter-million miles showing<\/a>; not quite up there with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a41645618\/volvo-beats-honda-for-all-time-junkyard-treasure-odometer-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:35;\">the 600k-milers<\/a> I find during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:36;\">my junkyard travels<\/a>, but still impressive.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/15112827\/55-1988-Hyundai-Excel-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a bit rusty, though the body filler may have slowed down the leakage into the trunk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/15112750\/03-1988-Hyundai-Excel-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It will be crushed very close to where it was sold new.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/12\/15112759\/18-1988-Hyundai-Excel-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Excel wasn&#8217;t a good car, but it was an\u00a0<em>important<\/em> car and thus a big piece of our automotive heritage. That&#8217;s what makes this one a <em>gem<\/em>.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"Zoh3s0owr4c\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<p>Buy two for the cost of an average car!
