In rear-wheel-drive form, it ties the all-wheel-drive Lucid Air Pure in efficiency.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Consider the CEO of Mazda as among a relative minority of automaker executives who don\u2019t see the range race, or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138642_mazda-us-boss-longer-range-evs-aren-t-the-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">300-mile EVs, as the future<\/a>. Mazda revealed its upcoming flagship, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138621_2024-mazda-cx-90-plug-in-hybrid-images-revealed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CX-90 plug-in hybrid SUV<\/a>, with seating for up to eight. Yet now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138636_gm-ceo-flexible-on-battery-cells-in-ev-ramp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GM is quite flexible with battery format<\/a>, according to CEO Mary Barra this week. Given that, and GM\u2019s three Ultium Cells plants already announced, what about the economies of scale GM has touted in keeping as much as possible to one format?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ford CEO Jim Farley on Thursday revealed that the company will be aiming to make its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138654_ford-ceo-future-evs-radically-simplified-smaller-batteries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">future EVs \u201cradically simplified,\u201d<\/a> with smaller batteries, fewer parts, and the potential to be built in millions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100792116_m\" title=\"2022 Ford F-150 Lightning\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2022 Ford F-150 Lightning\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/ford_100792116_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/ford_100792116_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/ford_100792116_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/ford_100792116_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/ford_100792116_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/ford_100792116_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2022 Ford F-150 Lightning<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Toyota recently announced a new CEO and gave the green light to its first dedicated, large-scale EV platform. But as we noted, putting a recent presentation in context, that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138627_does-toyota-ceo-change-signal-it-s-going-all-in-on-evs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doesn\u2019t signal a greater commitment to EVs<\/a> or a concession to environmentalists who think the automaker is misguided.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Volvo is reportedly planning an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138651_volvo-ev-push-reportedly-adds-suvs-sedans-luxury-van\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanded EV lineup for China and Asian markets<\/a> that may include more sedans, SUVs, and a luxury van\u2014although it\u2019s certainly not yet clear which of those new models might come to Europe or the U.S.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Volkswagen has reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138652_report-small-vw-ev-battery-plant-considered-for-north-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved an EV smaller than the ID.4<\/a> for the U.S. market, with potential North American assembly. A North American battery plant is also being considered for Canada. Perhaps arriving around 2027, it would rival the Mercedes EQG, Jeep Recon, and Rivian R1S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138613_first-of-heaviest-hummer-suv-ever-auctioned-for-tread-lightly-cause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV<\/a> has been auctioned off for $500,000, with proceeds to benefit Tread Lightly. These chargers are to be installed over the next five years, with some of them among the 1,800 stations EA plans by 2025.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In California, EV sales added up to about 16% of vehicle sales in 2022. And while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138543_evs-near-a-fifth-of-california-sales-is-tesla-lead-shrinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesla once again took a mammoth lead<\/a>, with the Model 3 topping sales charts in the state, we looked at whether other brands are getting closer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"9\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100748178_m\" title=\"Marengo Charging Plaza, Pasadena, California\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Marengo Charging Plaza, Pasadena, California\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/marengo-charging-plaza-pasadena-california_100748178_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/marengo-charging-plaza-pasadena-california_100748178_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/marengo-charging-plaza-pasadena-california_100748178_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/marengo-charging-plaza-pasadena-california_100748178_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/marengo-charging-plaza-pasadena-california_100748178_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/marengo-charging-plaza-pasadena-california_100748178_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Marengo Charging Plaza, Pasadena, California<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A study commissioned by a climate policy think tank and backstopped by UC Davis research has found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138597_study-smaller-ev-batteries-would-lessen-lithium-mining-mess\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">limiting the size of EV batteries<\/a> would cut the demand for lithium by as much as 42%\u2014through all the benefits including reduced pollution and economic advantages. But convincing the market to buy EVs with smaller batteries is a harder sell.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Lawmakers in Kansas have called for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138640_kansas-lawmakers-want-to-tax-public-ev-charging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a tax on public EV charging, but not home charging<\/a>. But it will definitely take more on higher-traffic routes and for connecting adjacent routes, it argues.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ford earlier in the week announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138609_ford-undoes-some-of-its-price-hike-on-the-2023-mustang-mach-e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">price reductions across its 2023 Mustang Mach-E lineup<\/a>. The U.S. Treasury Department announced a change in what will be considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138665_treasury-lifts-ev-tax-credit-confusion-over-suv-price-cap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an SUV under EV tax-credit price cap requirements<\/a>, and it should expand the price cap of many models\u2014like the Mach-E\u2014up to $80,000 and help ease confusion over some model lineups that were called cars in one configuration and SUVs in another.
