{"id":42082,"date":"2023-02-05T11:07:42","date_gmt":"2023-02-05T16:07:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=42082"},"modified":"2023-02-05T11:07:42","modified_gmt":"2023-02-05T16:07:42","slug":"cheaper-to-drive-ev-than-gas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=42082","title":{"rendered":"No, It&#8217;s Still Cheaper To Drive 100 Miles In An Electric Car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, Jalopnik published an <a href=\"https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/driving-100-miles-in-an-ev-is-now-more-expensive-than-i-1850031874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> boasting that \u201cDriving 100 Miles in an EV Is Now More Expensive Than in an ICE.\u201d That would be a very interesting update if it were generally true. I heard a similar argument from a Boston EV group recently, so this has really piqued my interest.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s consult the back of an envelope to check the math on Jalopnik\u2019s claim.<\/p>\n<p>For level-setting purposes, we can start with the following variables in Boston, a metro with some of the highest U.S. energy prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Fairly average EV efficiency of 3 miles per kilowatt hour (= 33.3 kWh to drive 100 miles)<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Boston\u2019s average electricity price is 26 cents\/kwh<\/p>\n<p>Charging from home is the cheapest and most common option, so we\u2019ll assume that\u2019s what\u2019s happening. Given the Boston electric prices, it would cost $8.66 to travel 100 miles. I don\u2019t happen to live in Boston, and neither do any of my coworkers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recurrentauto.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Recurrent<\/a>, so let\u2019s use average energy costs to look at 100 miles for some of our team members.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Winston-Salem: 11 cents\/kWh = $3.67 to drive 100 miles<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Des Moines: 13 cents\/kWh = $4.32 to drive 100 miles<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Seattle: 13.37 cent\/kWh = $4.45 to drive 100 miles<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Dallas: 14.77 cents\/kWh = $4.92 to drive 100 miles<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Cleveland: 15.25 cents\/kWh = $5.07 to drive 100 miles<\/p>\n<p>For level setting the gas car variables, let\u2019s pick a Toyota Corolla which gets 35 miles per gallon combined. For simplicity\u2019s sake, we\u2019ll stay away from hybrids.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf 100 miles would be 2.86 gallons (100 miles\/ 35 mpg)<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Boston\u2019s current gas price is $3.43 average<\/p>\n<p>That would be $9.82 per 100 miles with the ICE vehicle, compared to $8.66 with the EV. Close, but driving the EV is still cheaper.<\/p>\n<p>There is also some weird accounting in the Jalopnik article, too. This paragraph tries to factor in the externalities of using a public charger, but not the externalities of gas-powered cars, themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe massive increase in the report for charging station users versus home chargers is accounted for by the deadhead miles to reach stations and the opportunity cost of waiting for vehicles to charge at stations. The difference highlights the lackluster coverage for electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the United States.\u201c<\/p>\n<section class=\"relatedContent-new trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"related-content\" data-widget-size=\"content\" data-params=\"%7B%22type_id%22%3A0%2C%22title_id%22%3A%22%22%2C%22items%22%3A%5B%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22585756%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22These%20EVs%20Are%20Cheaper%20To%20Own%20Than%20Gas%20Cars%20Off%20The%20Lot%3A%20Study%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22electric-cars-cheaper-gas-cars-off-the-lot%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22is_video%22%3A%220%22%2C%22images%22%3A%7B%22s5%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.motor1.com%2Fimages%2Fmgl%2FMkWEkm%2Fs5%2F2022-hyundai-kona-electric-exterior-review.jpg%22%7D%7D%2C%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22558172%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22How%20Much%20Cheaper%20Is%20It%20To%20Own%20An%20EV%20Over%20A%20Gas%20Car%3F%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22electric-car-cost-versus-gas%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22is_video%22%3A%220%22%2C%22images%22%3A%7B%22s5%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.motor1.com%2Fimages%2Fmgl%2F2NOEWM%2Fs5%2F2022-tesla-model-3.jpg%22%7D%7D%5D%7D\">   <\/section>\n<p>While technically, there is a \u201ccost\u201d for waiting for a charger, there are also definite, measurable costs that come from gas cars: air pollution, oil extraction and refinement, and the societal impacts of climate change. You can\u2019t include the larger issues of charging without including the full picture on gas.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m eager to hear your thoughts in the comments. But, as a scientist by training, there is a way to be even more precise about these calculations. Feel free to skip or read on for this addendum on charging efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>No EV chargers are 100% efficient in getting electricity from the grid to the car battery. If we\u2019re being very conservative, we can guess that the typical Level 2 home charger (208-240V) is 90% efficient. A person is charged for the electricity measured at the meter, not what actually goes into their vehicle. Assuming 90% efficiency, it actually takes 1.11 kWh to get 1 kWh into the car\u2019s battery.<\/p>\n<p>1. With this in mind, we could revise the Boston area numbers above:<\/p>\n<p>a. 100 miles at 3 kWh\/mile would need 33.3 kWh from the battery.<\/p>\n<p>i. 33.3 kWh into the battery would require 37.0 kWh from the wall using an L2 charger assuming a 90% efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>ii. 37.0 kWh would cost $9.62 at 26 cents\/kWh.<\/p>\n<p>iii. The Corolla ICE at 35 mpg combined would need gas prices to be $3.37 for cost parity.<\/p>\n<p>b. 100 miles at 3.57 kWh\/mile would need 28.0 kWh from the battery (this is the EPA efficiency for a Chevrolet Bolt)<\/p>\n<p>i. 28.0 kWh into the battery would require 31.1 kWh from the wall.<\/p>\n<p>ii. 31.7 kWh would cost $8.09 at 26 cents\/kWh.<\/p>\n<p>iii. The Corolla ICE at 35 mpg combined would need gas prices to be $2.83 for cost parity.<\/p>\n<p>Since the current price of gas in Boston is higher than $3.37, even when factoring in charging efficiency, an EV is still cheaper.
