This was <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1980-Chevrolet\/1980-Chevrolet-Citation-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">the 1980 Chevrolet Citation<\/a>, a front-wheel-drive compact with the interior space, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/fuel-efficiency\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">fuel efficiency<\/a> and authentic Detroit styling needed to repel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/11\/10\/junkyard-gem-1980-honda-accord-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">those pesky imports<\/a> then flooding into American ports. We saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/04\/17\/junkyard-gem-1981-chevrolet-citation-hatchback-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">an example of the 1980 Citation hatchback sedan<\/a> (the best-selling configuration) in this series last spring, and now we&#8217;re following it up with a much rarer two-door notchback coupe from the same year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/01\/11115939\/41-1980-Chevrolet-Citation-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Citation (and its siblings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/photos\/junked-1980-pontiac-phoenix-lj-hatchback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the Pontiac Phoenix<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/07\/12\/junkyard-gem-1984-oldsmobile-omega-brougham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Oldsmobile Omega<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2017\/05\/1980-buick-skylark-limited-in-california-wrecking-yard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Buick Skylark<\/a>) scaled in at about 800 fewer pounds than their Nova predecessors, lopping off about 20 inches of overall length. Inside, it provided the kind of space Americans expected from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a37642096\/1978-chevrolet-malibu-coupe-is-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">much bigger midsize sedans<\/a>, and the modern suspension design offered a comfortable ride.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/01\/11115940\/42-1980-Chevrolet-Citation-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Here was a Detroit car that sipped gas, didn&#8217;t take up a huge amount of space, and\u00a0<em>felt<\/em> like a proper American machine inside and out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/01\/11115910\/06-1980-Chevrolet-Citation-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreservehistory.org\/essays\/oil-shock-of-1978-79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Geopolitical events sent gasoline prices skyrocketing<\/a> at just about the very moment when the first Citations became available, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/columns\/a36551014\/malaise-era-childhood-gas-lines-left-their-mark-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">gas lines and fuel rationing<\/a> in the United States. Americans bought more than 800,000 Citations during the 1980 model year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/01\/11115932\/31-1980-Chevrolet-Citation-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A great success, right? Unfortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/features\/gm-x-cars-chevrolet-citation-oldsmobile-buick-pontiac-photos-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">an onslaught of highly publicized quality problems and recalls<\/a> ruined the reputation of the Citation family in a hurry. <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">GM<\/a> had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/features\/a17012021\/the-skeptic-has-a-malibu-moment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">slipped a fleet of hand-assembled ringers to the automotive press<\/a> prior to the production cars hitting the street, which resulted in rapturous reviews of a vehicle that didn&#8217;t drive much like the torque-steering, erratic-braking machines that reached the general public. Sales crashed in a hurry, the Citation was gone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/11\/06\/junkyard-gem-1985-chevrolet-citation-5-door-hatchback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">after 1985<\/a>, and the 1980s ended up being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2010\/12\/curbside-classic-1980-chevrolet-citation-gms-deadliest-sin-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">The General&#8217;s worst decade ever<\/a> in terms of market-share loss.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/01\/11115941\/43-1980-Chevrolet-Citation-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s imagine that we&#8217;re still in the optimistic days of 1980, when the Citation would show the world that\u00a0<em>Detroit was back<\/em>. You could buy your new Citation as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2011\/12\/junkyard-find-1982-chevrolet-citation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">a hatchback with three<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/junkyard-treasures\/junkyard-treasure-1980-chevrolet-citation-5-door-hatchback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">five doors<\/a>, or as a snazzy two-door with a trunk. Just under 150,000 Citation coupes were sold for the 1980 model year, versus nearly 700,000 hatchbacks, and so these cars are nearly impossible to find today.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/01\/11115913\/07-1980-Chevrolet-Citation-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This is <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1980-Chevrolet\/1980-Chevrolet-Citation-Brochure\/slides\/1980_Chevrolet_Citation-08-09.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">a Club Coupe<\/a>, a version with <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1980-Chevrolet\/1980-Chevrolet-Citation-Brochure\/slides\/1980_Chevrolet_Citation-20-21.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">nicer standard features<\/a> than the base coupe. The MSRP for this car was $5,214, or about $19,952 in 2022 dollars. The price for the spartan base Citation coupe was just $4,800 ($18,368 today). That was a lot of car for the money, especially compared to such imports as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a30523730\/junkyard-treasure-1980-honda-accord-hatchback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">the 1980 Accord three-door hatchback<\/a>, which cost $5,949 ($22,765 now). The cheapest possible <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2016\/03\/junkyard-find-1980-toyota-corona-liftback-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">1980 Toyota Corona<\/a> (the four-door sedan with four-speed manual transmission) cost $5,649 ($21,617 in 2022 dollars), while even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nmr9OPQ5KcU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">the wretched Fiat Strada hatchback<\/a> retailed for $4,881.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/01\/11115921\/12-1980-Chevrolet-Citation-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Every 1980 Citation model except the non-Club coupe came with an AM radio as base equipment, which was most unusual for a cheap compact at a time when even a scratchy, single-speaker AM radio added hundreds of bucks to the out-the-door price. This car has air conditioning, which tacked on $566 to the price (around $2,166 today). It must have been a real headache to install <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a1875866\/1980s-pioneer-auto-earotica-car-stereo-ads-score-high-creepy-o-meter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">an aftermarket deck<\/a> in that vertical radio location.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/01\/11115917\/10-1980-Chevrolet-Citation-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It has a three-speed automatic as well, a $337 ($1,290 today) upgrade over the base <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/columns\/a34301141\/what-was-the-final-us-market-car-to-get-a-4-speed-manual-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">four-on-the-floor manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/01\/11115919\/11-1980-Chevrolet-Citation-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manualslib.com\/manual\/814334\/Chevrolet-1980-Chevrolet-Citation.html?page=35#manual\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">the owner&#8217;s manual<\/a>, the yellow EMISSIONS indicator appeared over the odometer (on &#8220;some cars&#8221;) when either the oxygen sensor or the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/catalytic+converter\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">catalytic converter<\/a> was due for replacement. I wonder how many years this one has been visible.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/01\/11115924\/17-1980-Chevrolet-Citation-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Yes, that&#8217;s a 2.5-liter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1831486\/cut-down-engine-week-gm-iron-duke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">Iron Duke four-banger<\/a> under the hood. Essentially one cylinder bank of the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/pontiac\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">Pontiac<\/a> 301 V8, the Iron Duke ran rough but held together fairly well by the standards of its time. Most did, although the spike in <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/cheap-gas-prices\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\">gas prices<\/a> caused by the Iranian Revolution resulted in more demand for Duke-powered Citations than GM had expected.
