{"id":43649,"date":"2023-02-25T00:03:17","date_gmt":"2023-02-25T05:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=43649"},"modified":"2023-02-25T00:03:17","modified_gmt":"2023-02-25T05:03:17","slug":"sono-motore-kills-sion-solar-ev-puts-program-up-for-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=43649","title":{"rendered":"Sono Motors Kills Sion Solar EV, Puts Program Up For Sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sono Motors has killed the Sion solar electric passenger car project, the EV startup has announced in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Effective today, the company will pivot its business model to &#8220;exclusively retrofitting and integrating its solar technology onto third party vehicles.&#8221;\u00a0Sono Motors says the termination of the Sion program reflects a decision &#8220;to focus on a capital-light business model in light of depressed capital market conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/600518\/sono-motors-sion-solar-ev-production-revealed\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22600518%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22sono-motors-sion-solar-ev-production-revealed%22%7D\">Sion solar EV<\/a> placed a heavy burden on the company&#8217;s budget since an estimated 90 percent of the funding needs for 2023 were generated by the solar passenger car project.<\/p>\n<p>The Munich-based company noted that it is now implementing a significant cost reduction program given the resource-intensive nature of the Sion program, including personnel requirements. In this context, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/615851\/sono-motors-sion-starts-us-tour-with-visit-nyc-times-square\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22615851%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22sono-motors-sion-starts-us-tour-with-visit-nyc-times-square%22%7D\">Sono Motors<\/a> plans to lay off approximately 300 employees.<\/p>\n<p>So what happens with the 45,000 paid reservations for the Sono Sion? It was a difficult decision and despite more than 45,000 reservations and pre-orders for the Sion, we were compelled to react to the ongoing financial market instability and streamline our business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laurin Hahn, co-founder and CEO of Sono Motors<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Sion solar EV may not be gone for good, though. Sono Motors said the success of the Sion&#8217;s 18-vehicle series-validation program proved that the concept of a solar electric vehicle (SEV) works. As a result, it intends to sell the program; it remains to be seen if that will materialize.<\/p>\n<p>The company added that it will continue to utilize patented technology developed in the Sion program in its <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/577556\/munich-sono-motors-bus-trailer-solar\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22577556%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22munich-sono-motors-bus-trailer-solar%22%7D\">ongoing integration and retrofit business<\/a>.\u00a0Sono Motors aims to focus specifically on buses and third-party OEM cars, in addition to refrigerated trucks and recreational vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>It is currently working as a development-partner and supplier with 23 companies across ten countries in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Customers include Mitsubishi Europe, Chereau, Scania, and MAN Truck &amp; Bus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/542802\/sono-us-ipo\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22542802%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22sono-us-ipo%22%7D\">Sono Motors<\/a> will now scale up its technology, starting with the introduction of the next generation of its mass-market-ready retrofit solution for cleaner public transportation \u2013 the &#8216;Solar Bus Kit&#8217; \u2013 planned for the second quarter of 2023.
