Ducati<\/a> won\u2019t launch an electric motorcycle<\/a> for consumers anytime soon, making the motorcycle manufacturer an outlier in Volkswagen<\/a> AG\u2019s \u20ac89 billion ($94 billion) push to electrify its stable of businesses.<\/p>\n

The Italian brand will be the sole producer of e-bikes racing in the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup this year and presented its first electric motorcycle prototype for the project in June. But Jason Chinnock, chief executive officer of Ducati\u2019s North American operations, said the company still has work to do improving battery<\/a> range and performance before an e-bike<\/a> will be ready for showrooms.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be some years,\u201d Chinnock told Bloomberg Television on Thursday. \u201cThe battery technology really isn\u2019t there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chinnock\u2019s view contrasts not only with VW<\/a>\u2019s embrace of batteries for electric passenger cars, but with rival Harley-Davidson<\/a> Inc.\u2019s enthusiasm for e-bikes. Harley<\/a> launched the LiveWire \u2014 its first plug-in model \u2014 in 2019 and executed a spinoff of its electric motorcycle division last year, merging it with a special purpose acquisition company to form LiveWire Group Inc.<\/p>\n

Electrification is hitting the motorcycle segment more unevenly than it is passenger cars. While Honda<\/a> Motor Co. recently announced plans to roll<\/a> out at least 10 models worldwide by 2025, BMW<\/a> AG has so far only unveiled concept bikes.<\/p>\n

As one of the four brands under Volkswagen\u2019s premium group that shares research and production resources, Ducati is exploring alternative fuels<\/a> and other technologies to reduce its carbon footprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere isn\u2019t a consumer bike directly in development because this is still so early,\u201d Chinnock said. \u201cIt\u2019s really going to take battery tech to evolve.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce that is evolved to the point where it makes sense for us to integrate it in, where we can address performance and range and weight, that\u2019s the trifecta,\u201d Chinnock said. \u201cIt still needs to be distinctly a Ducati.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
