The vehicles included in the campaign are fitted with front seat belt pretensioners that can explode in an accident and pelt shrapnel into the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Assigned <a href=\"https:\/\/static.nhtsa.gov\/odi\/rcl\/2023\/RCLRPT-23V094-8676.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">recall number 23V-094<\/a> by the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/nhtsa\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> (<a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/nhtsa\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">NHTSA<\/a>), the campaign includes 9,720 units of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/01\/27\/2022-genesis-g80-sport-prestige-road-test-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">the G80<\/a> built between July 2020 and January 2023, 940 units of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/12\/28\/2023-genesis-gv60-performance-drivers-notes-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the GV60<\/a> built between February and December 2022, 21,917 units of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/09\/13\/2022-genesis-gv70-first-drive\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">the GV70<\/a> built between March 2021 and January 2023 and 32,940 units of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/08\/11\/2021-genesis-gv80-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the GV80<\/a> (pictured) built between July 2020 and December 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis estimates that the defect is present in about 1% of the 65,517 cars it&#8217;s <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/recalls\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">recalling<\/a>, but the issue is potentially serious. The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/auto-repair\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">cars that are part<\/a> of the campaign are equipped with pyrotechnic-type seat belt pretensioners that can &#8220;deploy abnormally in certain crashes due to [an] over-pressurization of the pretensioner pipe,&#8221; according to the manufacturer. In turn, this problem can send &#8220;metal fragments&#8221; flying across the cabin, which increases the risk of an injury. Genesis parent company <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hyundai\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Hyundai<\/a> isn&#8217;t aware of any injuries or fatalities, however.<\/p>\n<p>It sounds like there&#8217;s no way to predict whether a pretensioner will explode. Genesis points out that &#8220;the potential for this condition is dependent on vehicle characteristics, pretensioner load limiter specification, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/airbag\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">airbag<\/a> control unit logic, and crash duration and severity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Owners of affected cars will be notified by mail starting in April 2023. They&#8217;ll be asked to bring their vehicle to the nearest <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-dealers\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">dealer<\/a> so that a technician can secure the seat belt pretensioner&#8217;s micro gas <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/article\/best-power-generators\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">generator<\/a> and delivery pipe with a cap to prevent abnormal deployment.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first time that Hyundai has issued a recall to address exploding seat belt pretensioners. In November 2021, the firm issued <a href=\"https:\/\/static.nhtsa.gov\/odi\/rcl\/2021\/RCLRPT-21V796-3487.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">recall number 21V-796<\/a> to replace the part in 978 units of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/08\/13\/2021-hyundai-elantra-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">the Elantra<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/01\/24\/2020-hyundai-venue-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">Venue<\/a>, GV70, and GV80.
