Over the years, Elon Musk<\/a> has emphasized that Tesla<\/a>‘s greatest advantage would come from fast-paced innovation in manufacturing. This proved, once again, to be a major theme during the much-anticipated\u00a0Tesla Investor Day<\/em>\u00a0event in Austin, Texas yesterday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Financial Times<\/a>, “Tesla executives said a wide range of efficiency and cost improvements has put the company on track to launch a far cheaper electric vehicle.” This lower-priced vehicle\u00a0would be manufactured using\u00a0Tesla’s “next-generation platform” and include some significant advances.<\/p>\n

A look at the stark differences between Tesla’s current manufacturing approach for vehicle assembly versus the company’s new\u00a0“Unboxed Process” for next-generation vehicles was captured (via a fascinating animated comparison showcased by Tesla) courtesy of\u00a0@strawberrywell<\/a>\u00a0via Twitter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In an effort to improve manufacturing prowess,\u00a0Tom Zhu, head of Tesla\u2019s China operations said\u00a0the company follows\u00a0a process at each of its\u00a0factories to \u201cquestion, delete, simplify, accelerate, [and] automate\u201d at every opportunity. In essence, Tesla examines each step in its manufacturing process and cuts out anything non-essential before working out how to speed up and automate the process.<\/p>\n

Looking to the future, Elon Musk\u00a0noted that \u201caffordability\u201d was the biggest barrier to Tesla reaching a far bigger market. Before Tesla’s recent price cuts for its electric vehicles, he said, \u201cwe weren\u2019t sure about what the price elasticity of demand was for Tesla… [but] we found that even small changes in price have a big impact on demand \u2014 very big.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

For instance, after Tesla’s recent price cuts in China,\u00a0Zhu\u00a0confirmed Musk’s\u00a0point\u00a0noting, “we generated huge demand, more than we can produce really.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

So how quickly can\u00a0Tesla begin work on its lower-priced next-generation vehicle?\u00a0Lars Moravy, head of Tesla’s vehicle engineering said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to move that quickly over the next couple of years.\u201d He added that the new, \u201clarge-volume\u201d vehicle would be produced at a number of the company\u2019s plants including the new facility in Mexico that Tesla just confirmed earlier this week.<\/p>\n
