But I have to separate my own feelings from what is best for the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">That includes the establishment next month of a standalone business unit to oversee development of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/honda\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Honda&#8217;s<\/a> EV and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">battery<\/a> business, which eventually could include an investment in charging stations, similar to <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Tesla&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0Supercharger network, Mibe said in Marysville, Ohio, at the hub of the company\u2019s U.S. operations.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">&#8220;The charging infrastructure is not at a place that it needs to be for our customers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">Mibe added that Honda is running feasibility studies on everything from <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/dodge\/charger\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">chargers<\/a> and advanced batteries to aerial vehicles and rockets, as well as new low-carbon e-fuels that could help keep combustion engines around &#8211; in performance cars, big <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">trucks<\/a> and airplanes &#8211; for another decade or two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-5\">But Mibe added, \u201cas we move toward carbon neutrality, we are focused on electrification and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/hydrogen\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">fuel cells<\/a> &#8211; those are the two core components of future mobility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-6\">Honda has been slow to follow larger rivals, from <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Volkswagen<\/a> AG to <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">General Motors Co<\/a>, in committing billions of dollars to developing and building EVs and batteries. Now it plans to invest at least $40 billion through 2030, with the goal of pushing <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hybrid\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">hybrid<\/a> and fully <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">electric vehicles<\/a> to 40% of its sales by decade&#8217;s end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-7\">Those investments include a $3.5 billion joint venture to build batteries with LG Energy Solution in nearby Jeffersonville, Ohio, starting in 2025, for use in Honda\u2019s future EV factories in North America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-8\">Before then, Honda in 2024 will get two new electric SUVs, the Honda Prologue and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/10\/10\/2024-acura-zdx-spy-photos\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the Acura ZDX<\/a>, from <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">GM<\/a>\u2019s Spring Hills factory in Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-9\">Mibe confirmed that Honda is developing its own EV architectures, the first of which will arrive in the U.S. in 2026, as well as advanced batteries of its own design for some of those future models.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Honda is moving rapidly to catch up with electric-vehicle competitors in global markets, but the company&#8217;s top executive said combustion engines could last through 2040 and beyond.
