An AWD performance version with over 300 hp is also on the cards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Per British outlet AutoCar, the ID.2 R will be a &#8220;baby hot hatch&#8221; that will compete against the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/623064\/2023-abarth-500e-electric-hot-hatch\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22623064%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%222023-abarth-500e-electric-hot-hatch%22%7D\">Abarth\u00a0500e<\/a>. Although information remains scarce for now, we know <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/volkswagen\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"2\" data-params=\"%7B%22alias%22%3A%22volkswagen%22%7D\">Volkswagen<\/a>&#8216;s R performance division is currently working on several EVs. Affordable compact crossovers are very popular in Europe, where Volkswagen currently offers the ICE T-Cross and T-Roc. Undoubtedly, VW will be hoping an ID.2 crossover will be able to convert\u00a0T-Cross and T-Roc owners to electric.\u00a0The ID.2 is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen sold\u00a0118,000 EVs in Q4 2022, a new record for the German brand. In total, over 300,000 VW EVs were produced in 2022. The clear best-seller was the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/volkswagen\/id-4\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"1\" data-params=\"%7B%22make_alias%22%3A%22volkswagen%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22id-4%22%7D\">ID.4<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/volkswagen\/id5\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"1\" data-params=\"%7B%22make_alias%22%3A%22volkswagen%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22id5%22%7D\">ID.5<\/a> with 193,200 units delivered last year. The ID.3 hatchback, which is not sold in the US, had 76,600 sales. China-exclusive models, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/501644\/volkswagen-id6-unveiling-china\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22501644%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22volkswagen-id6-unveiling-china%22%7D\">ID.6<\/a>, accounted for the remainder of deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen currently has five factories building EVs. Two in Germany (Zwicaku and Emden), two in China (Foshan and\u00a0Anting) and one in the US (Chattanooga, Tennessee). It&#8217;s probable the ID.2 will be a Europe-only model, hence it will likely be built in either\u00a0Zwicaku or Emden. However, exports to Asian markets could be a possibility.
