A TikTok video demonstrated how to steal Hyundais and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/kia\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Kias<\/a> that need a key to start and were built without immobilizers. That video turned into so many cars being swiped nationwide that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/03\/21\/states-demand-hyundai-kia-do-more-to-stop-car-thefts-tiktok\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">some state attorneys general are drawing up cases<\/a> against the automaker and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/02\/09\/hyundai-kia-models-state-farm-denied-insurance-policies\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">some insurers have refused to cover<\/a> owners of affected models. So Hyundai has partnered with the Automobile Association of America (<a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aaa.com\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\" rel=\"noopener\">AAA<\/a>) to provide coverage to owners of at-risk vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Plans can be purchased in 47 states (with Alaska, Massachusetts, and Washington excluded because AAA&#8217;s independent franchises don&#8217;t sell there).<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not sure why Hyundai needed to partner with an <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-insurance\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">insurer<\/a> to make this happen, not that it matters so long as drivers of the nearly 4 million models concerned can get affordable coverage and continue driving. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/02\/14\/hyundai-launches-software-update-to-fight-thefts\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">anti-theft software that adds control module logic<\/a> to hinder thefts has been <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/rolls_royce\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">rolled<\/a> out two months ahead of schedule, the install requiring a trip to the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-dealers\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">dealer<\/a> and an hour&#8217;s wait. So long as drivers lock and unlock their vehicles with the key fob, the software activates a factory alarm and ignition kill command. After the install, dealers will place stickers on the windows to let the curious know the vehicle has an anti-theft system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A small number of cars won&#8217;t be able to accept the software, though. For owners of those vehicles, Hyundai says it will reimburse the purchase of a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/article\/car-steering-wheel-lock\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">steering wheel lock<\/a> and offset the cost of a more thorough solution like an alarm kit.<\/p>\n<p>To see if your vehicle is on the software register, or schedule a dealer appointment, or inquire about alarm reimbursements, head to the Hyundai theft site.
