Turning to Simca, which had become part of Chrysler Europe after Chrysler&#8217;s absorption of the Rootes Group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allpar.com\/threads\/back-story-how-chrysler-chose-to-build-the-horizon-and-omni.229864\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">a promising hatchback concept<\/a> was developed into both <a href=\"http:\/\/storm.oldcarmanualproject.com\/talbothorizon1981.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">a European-market version<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allpar.com\/threads\/the-dodge-omni-and-plymouth-horizon.229867\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">a significantly different American-market version<\/a>. Today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a> is an example of the latter type, found in a Denver-area self-service boneyard last summer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115442\/55-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The first of these cars came off the <a href=\"https:\/\/moparinsiders.com\/belvidere-assembly-plant-set-to-close-doors-after-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Belvidere Assembly<\/a> line in Illinois as 1978 models (sadly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/02\/28\/stellantis-idles-belvidere-illinois-factory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Stellantis just shuttered Belvidere<\/a> in February). The Dodge-badged version was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/01\/02\/junkyard-gem-1988-dodge-omni-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the Omni<\/a>, while <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Plymouth\/1979Plymouth\/79Horizon\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">the Plymouth version was the Horizon<\/a>; the generic term for this car is thus\u00a0<em>Omnirizon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115420\/37-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Omnirizon was a great success for Chrysler, and many other vehicles were based on its platform. To name a few members of the extended Omnirizon family: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/but-wait-theres-more\/a38889216\/malaise-era-charger-and-challenger-meet-under-unpleasant-circumstances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">1982-1987 Dodge Charger<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/06\/20\/junkyard-1983-dodge-rampage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Dodge Rampage<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/06\/19\/junkyard-gem-1983-plymouth-scamp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Plymouth Scamp<\/a> minitrucks, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c9_E_XXWP-Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">the Plymouth Turismo of Cocaine Factory fame<\/a>. Astoundingly, production continued all the way <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2014\/01\/junkyard-find-1990-plymouth-horizon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">through 1990<\/a>, which meant that these thoroughly 1970s cars stuck around long enough to <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Dodge\/1990-Dodge\/1990-Dodge-Omni-Brochure\/slides\/1990_Dodge_Omni-02-03-04.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">get airbags as standard equipment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115429\/46-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Just as was the case with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/10\/16\/junkyard-gem-1990-mitsubishi-mirage-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">Mitsubishi-built<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/02\/28\/junkyard-gem-1982-dodge-colt-hatchback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Dodge<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/08\/27\/junkyard-gem-1989-plymouth-colt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Plymouth Colts<\/a>, there never were any significant differences\u2014pricing or otherwise\u2014between the Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115404\/27-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Omnirizon got a fascinating assortment of engines during its first half-decade or so. For 1978 through 1980, it received the same 1.7-liter Volkswagen straight-four that went into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/04\/28\/1977-volkswagen-rabbit-junkyard-gem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">US-market Rabbits<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/05\/22\/junkyard-gem-1979-volkswagen-scirocco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Sciroccos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/05\/29\/junkyard-gem-1982-volkswagen-jetta-diesel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">Jettas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=drmzr7reRsw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">Audi 4000s<\/a>. This one was rated at 77 horsepower and 90 pound-feet.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115412\/31-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Chrysler began bolting in its homegrown 2.2-liter four-banger starting with the 1981 Omnirizons, with the hilariously quick <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2011\/11\/junkyard-find-1986-dodge-omni-glh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">Omni GLH<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/01\/06\/carroll-shelby-owned-dodge-omni-glhs-mecum-auction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">GLHS<\/a> getting turbocharged versions a few years later. From the 1983 through 1986 model years, penny-pinching Americans could buy <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Plymouth\/1984%20Plymouth\/1984-Plymouth-Horizon-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">their base-model Omnirizons<\/a> with 1.6-liter Peugeot-built Simca engines delivering 62 French horses to the front wheels.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115343\/11-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This Horizon is absolutely <em>loaded<\/em> by the standards of late-1970s economy cars. The MSRP was just $4,278 (about $18,843 in 2023 dollars), but this automatic transmission would have added another $319 to the cost ($1,405 today). The base transmission for 1979 was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/columns\/a34301141\/what-was-the-final-us-market-car-to-get-a-4-speed-manual-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">four-on-the-floor manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115353\/20-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve spent that much for clutch-free driving, why not spring for refrigerated air? The A\/C in this car cost $507 ($2,233 now).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115349\/17-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 1979 Omnirizon came with an AM radio as base equipment, which was nowhere near a given in cheap cars of that era, but this one has the optional AM\/FM stereo radio. The cost: 141 bucks, or 621 bucks after inflation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115340\/05-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Then we&#8217;ve got <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Plymouth\/1979Plymouth\/79Horizon\/slides\/1979_Plymouth_Horizon-11.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">the bucket seats<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Plymouth\/1979Plymouth\/79Horizon\/slides\/1979_Plymouth_Horizon-12.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">sport steering wheel<\/a> and everything else. By the time the dust settled, the out-the-door cost for this car must have been well over six grand. To put that into perspective, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/10\/20\/junkyard-gem-1979-chrysler-cordoba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\">Cordoba<\/a> listed at $6,306 that year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rFaQ_YXwuRI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:31;\">Gas lines and rationing scared car shoppers in 1979<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115414\/33-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It has fender-mounted turn-signal indicators, just like <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chrysler_and_Imperial\/1971_Chrysler\/1971-Chrysler-and-Imperial-Brochure\/slides\/1971%20Chrysler%20and%20Imperial-12-13.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:32;\">a 1971 Chrysler New Yorker<\/a>. These lights were included with the optional Light Package and Popular Equipment Group, priced at $46 and $279, respectively ($203 and $1,229 now).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115416\/35-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The best thing about this car is <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Plymouth\/1979Plymouth\/79Horizon\/slides\/1979_Plymouth_Horizon-09.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:33;\">the &#8220;Premium Woodgrain Package,&#8221;<\/a> which cost $331 ($1,458 in 2023 dollars).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115345\/12-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Of\u00a0<em>course<\/em> that package included a &#8220;wood&#8221; shift knob.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115434\/49-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It appears that this car&#8217;s usual parking place had the driver&#8217;s side facing to the south, which allowed the fierce Colorado sun to bleach the &#8220;wood&#8221; to near-invisibility.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115357\/23-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car was well-cared-for during its 43 years on the road, and it outlasted most of its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2016\/03\/junkyard-find-1978-honda-civic-hatchback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:34;\">Honda Civic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/09\/23\/junkyard-gem-1979-datsun-210-two-door-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:35;\">Datsun 210<\/a> competitors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/20115440\/53-1979-Plymouth-Horizon-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Omnirizon got cheaper and cheaper (in real terms) as Chrysler made its production more efficient.
