{"id":47953,"date":"2023-04-21T12:03:40","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T16:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=47953"},"modified":"2023-04-21T12:03:40","modified_gmt":"2023-04-21T16:03:40","slug":"1139434_mercedes-benz-g-class-goes-retro-to-mark-500-000th-build","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=47953","title":{"rendered":"Mercedes-Benz G-Class goes retro to mark 500,000th build"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 500,000th Mercedes-Benz G-Class rolled off the production line on Thursday at the SUV&#8217;s plant in Graz, Austria.<\/p>\n<p>The milestone comes 44 years after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1121415_civilian-mercedes-benz-g-class-turns-40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">civilian version of the G-Class made its debut<\/a>, and as a sign of the vehicle&#8217;s growing popularity, the last 200,000 examples were built in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1111655_300000th-mercedes-benz-g-class-rolls-off-the-assembly-line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just the previous six years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p>To mark the milestone, the 500,000th example is a special one-off design with elements mimicking an early G-Class, specifically a 1986 280 GE. Key retro cues include the agave green exterior paint (one of the earliest colors available on a G-Class), checkered fabric on the seats, and orange lenses for the indicator lamps. The design of the steering wheel and spare wheel cover also feature classic cues, according to Mercedes.<\/p>\n<p>The G-Class, which draws its name from gelandewagen, the German word for \u201coff-road vehicle,\u201d was conceived as a military vehicle. Steyr-Daimler-Puch was responsible for production, right up until 2001 when the company was dissolved. However, its vehicle manufacturing operations were taken over by Canada&#8217;s Magna International and turned into the new division Magna Steyr, which today still builds the G-Class for Mercedes.<\/p>\n<p>Over the decades, the G-Class has been updated while keeping its look and feel unchanged\u2014a philosophy that will be tested next year when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1125923_2024-mercedes-benz-eqg-spy-shots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first electric G-Class is launched<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 500,000th Mercedes-Benz G-Class rolled off the production line on Thursday at the SUV&#8217;s plant in Graz, Austria.
