I&#8217;ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/06\/02\/1996-bmw-z3-roadster-junkyard-gem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">seeing discarded Z3s<\/a> for a few years now, during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">my travels through the boneyards<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2005-BMW-Z4\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">its E85 successor<\/a> appears to have held onto its value well enough to get fixed when it gets bent or broken\u2026 until now. Here&#8217;s a first-year E85 Z4, found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.picknpull.com\/locations\/42\/fairfield-ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">a car graveyard in Northern California<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/09223623\/02-2004-BMW-Z4-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Just as the Z3&#8217;s chassis was derived from that of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/12\/30\/junkyard-gem-1996-bmw-318ti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the E36 3-Series<\/a>, the first Z4 was based on the platform of the E36&#8217;s successor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/04\/25\/junkyard-gem-1999-bmw-323i-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the E46<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/09223632\/14-2004-BMW-Z4-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>American Z4 shoppers in 2003 had their choice of two straight-six engines: a 2.5-liter rated at 184 horsepower and a 3.0-liter rated at 225 horsepower.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/09223640\/20-2004-BMW-Z4-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car has the 2.5-liter engine. The MSRP on this car was $33,100, or about $54,804 in 2023 dollars.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/09223638\/19-2004-BMW-Z4-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The interior has been thoroughly gutted by bargain-hunting junkyard shoppers, but the pedal count tells us that it came with the five-speed automatic transmission rather than the base 5-speed manual (the 3.0i came with a 6-speed manual as standard equipment).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/09223648\/27-2004-BMW-Z4-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2007-BMW-Z4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">The Z4 Coupe<\/a> didn&#8217;t become available until the 2006 model year, so it was mandatory convertibles for all Z4 buyers when this car was new.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/09223629\/12-2004-BMW-Z4-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It appears that this car had an unfortunate scrape-the-guardrail incident, followed by not-so-effective repairs involving body filler and tape.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/09223650\/29-2004-BMW-Z4-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There will be more junkyard Z4s to come, and they&#8217;ll get picked over less quickly as they become more commonplace.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"_rlcJ-MuL0s\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<p>Driving through a puddle has never been so exhilarating.
