{"id":48024,"date":"2023-04-23T12:03:10","date_gmt":"2023-04-23T16:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=48024"},"modified":"2023-04-23T12:03:10","modified_gmt":"2023-04-23T16:03:10","slug":"toyotas-new-president-vows-new-evs-will-stand-out-as-toyota-like","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=48024","title":{"rendered":"Toyota&#8217;s new president vows new EVs will stand out as &#8216;Toyota-like&#8217; &#8211; Autoblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TOKYO \u2014 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Toyota<\/a>\u2019s new president Koji Sato has promised what he called an aggressive shift on \u201celectrification,\u201d while acknowledging criticism that <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/japan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Japan<\/a>\u2019s top automaker has fallen behind in actual volumes of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">electric vehicles<\/a> sold compared to its rivals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe like to see that as people cheering Toyota on,\u201d to play catchup in <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">electric cars<\/a>, Sato told reporters Friday at <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/TM\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\" rel=\"noopener\">Toyota Motor Corp<\/a>.\u2019s Tokyo headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we look at in practical terms of the situation today, we have done a great deal in reducing carbon <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/emissions\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">emissions<\/a>,\u201d he said, defending the automaker&#8217;s record on other gas-sipping technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota is a leader in <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hybrid\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">hybrids<\/a>, which have both a gasoline engine and electric motor, and Sato stressed that different markets have varying powertrain needs, with emerging markets being slower to adopt pure electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>But he said pure electric vehicles allow for more software functions because of their connectivity and other features, stressing that Toyota\u2019s electric vehicles would highlight \u201cintelligence,\u201d such as services and entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>Sato, who has managed the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lexus\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Lexus<\/a> luxury division, declined to outline specifics of such features. But he stressed that future EV models would be truly \u201cToyota-like,\u201d pointing to a high standard for quality and not just affordable pricing.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s entire production system must be revamped to make quality EVs befitting the Toyota or Lexus nameplates, he said. Toyota prides itself on its \u201cjust in time\u201d production system, which runs like clockwork and is praised by manufacturing experts around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota now offers the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/bz4x\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">bZ4X<\/a> electric compact <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/crossover\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">crossover<\/a>, packed with what\u2019s called the e-TNGA platform. That stands for \u201cToyota New Global Architecture,\u201d also used in its <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/prius\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Prius<\/a> and Lexus models.. The electric platform was developed in collaboration with <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/subaru\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Subaru<\/a>, a Toyota group company.<\/p>\n<p>The bZ4X is available in Japan, the U.S., and parts of Europe, such as Germany and Britain, as well as <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/china\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">China<\/a> and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota also recently announced a new electric car to be sold in China, called bZ3. It will use technology developed with Chinese EV manufacturer BYD Co. in a collaboration that also includes state-owned Tianjin FAW and other partners.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota and BYD set up a joint venture company three years ago to jointly research and develop battery electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/auto-shanghai-2023-electric-volkswagen-9e3c033a8d6895e8f297ac7e871617bb\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Shanghai auto show<\/a> this week, Toyota showed a couple of \u201cbZ series\u201d EVs in the works for the Chinese market, a sleek crossover and a model called <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/flex\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Flex<\/a> Space Concept, billed as offering a home-like environment in a car for families.<\/p>\n<p>But overall, the world\u2019s EV sector has so far been dominated by the likes of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">Tesla<\/a>, Japanese rival <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/NSANY\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\" rel=\"noopener\">Nissan Motor Co<\/a>., which makes the Leaf, and BYD. So Toyota has some catching up to do.<\/p>\n<p>Sato <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/toyota-motor-corp-japan-business-ba481e3067d04520b99d2be8ce51ac5a\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">recently replaced Akio Toyoda<\/a>, a grandson of the company\u2019s founder who had served as chief executive since 2009, presiding over some difficult years. They included the global financial crisis, as well as a massive recall scandal in the U.S., over \u201cunintended acceleration,\u201d in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Sato kept referring to Toyoda as \u201cChairman Akio,\u201d his new title. Although they both love cars, he said his approach was different as a president with an engineering background. Toyoda has a business background, although he is also a race car driver.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota&#8217;s new management lineup still needs its shareholders\u2019 approval at the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/article\/best-power-generators\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">general<\/a> meeting, held every year in June.
