While Musk had ambitions to take on mass manufacturers with a $35,000 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/model+3\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Model 3<\/a>, he ended up charging much more \u2014 first out of necessity to keep Tesla afloat, and then because he and the broader industry were production constrained.<\/p>\n<p>Musk set wheels in motion this time last year to change all that. Tesla opened two new plants, doubling its car factory footprint. With Musk dead set on expansion and less concerned about earnings, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Ford<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/renault\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Renault<\/a> bosses are now among the ones looking nervously in their rear view mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrice wars are breaking out everywhere,\u201d Ford CEO Jim Farley said Thursday at a charity event in Detroit, days after Renault said it was examining how its models are positioned. \u201cWho\u2019s going to blink for growth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luxury-car makers won\u2019t be totally immune to pricing pressure \u2014 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mercedes_benz\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Mercedes<\/a> slashed the stickers on its EVs in <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/china\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">China<\/a> late last year, weeks after Tesla started cutting. But German executives have been adamant about their unwillingness to follow Musk in compromising brand value for volume.<\/p>\n<p>If anything, Mercedes-Benz Group AG CEO Ola K\u00e4llenius wants to move further upmarket, as this strategy has been paying dividends. The manufacturer said late Thursday that earnings were stronger than expected in the first quarter, driven by resilient pricing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTesla is not only sacrificing its EV margins to achieve its volume ambitions. To some extent, it is also placing the goodwill and brand equity that it has built up on the altar too,\u201d Daniel Roeska, Bernstein\u2019s European auto analyst, wrote in a report Thursday. \u201cThis is most important in the premium end of the market, where brand perception and social status are the crux of sales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s markdowns have been dramatic and swift. In the US, Tesla has <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/hacking\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">hacked<\/a> the starting price of its top-selling <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/model+y\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Model Y<\/a> sport utility vehicle by 29% in three months.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an issue for Ford, which recently discounted its <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/mustang+mach_e\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Mustang Mach-E<\/a> SUV by about $4,500 on average to stay competitive. While the automaker pulled ahead of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">General Motors Co<\/a>. last year as the No. 2 seller of EVs in the US, it remains well behind Tesla.<\/p>\n<p>With Ford lacking the economies of scale Musk has built and investing heavily to catch up, the company has forecast a $3 billion loss for its <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">electric vehicle<\/a> business this year.<\/p>\n<p>Renault is planning to go a step further than Ford \u2014 not only separating its EV and combustion engine business, but planning an initial public offering for its plug-in car and software operations. The head of the Renault brand called Tesla\u2019s price cuts a clear challenge early this week, and investors sold off the French company\u2019s stock on Thursday despite its strong first-quarter sales.<\/p>\n<p>While fielding several questions on the sustainability of the \u20ac42,000 ($46,000) sticker on the electric Megane E-Tech hatchback, Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pi\u00e9ton acknowledged that overall pricing may be \u201ca little softer\u201d in the second half.
