{"id":48108,"date":"2023-04-24T12:03:41","date_gmt":"2023-04-24T16:03:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=48108"},"modified":"2023-04-24T12:03:41","modified_gmt":"2023-04-24T16:03:41","slug":"1027975_company-that-once-tried-to-save-saab-has-shut-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=48108","title":{"rendered":"Company that once tried to save Saab has shut down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/nevs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NEVS<\/a>, a Swedish electric-vehicle startup most widely recognized for its attempt to restart production of Saab cars early last decade, shut down this month.<\/p>\n<p>In a terse statement on the NEVS website, the company said it is closing down its production development activities as part of a \u201chibernation plan.\u201d The company also said it is taking inquires about the sale of its properties.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.automobilwoche.de\/bc-online\/polestar-ubernimmt-ehemalige-saab-entwicklung\">Automobilwoche (subscription required)<\/a> reported last week that Polestar has applied to use a former Saab R&amp;D facility in Trollh\u00e4ttan, Sweden, for development of electric powertrains.<\/p>\n<p>NEVS was last owned by Evergrande Group, the Chinese conglomerate whose main property development arm ran into financial trouble in 2021 with debts of more than $300 billion. At that time, with funding drying up, NEVS began to look for a buyer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100478399_m\" title=\"NEVS starts production of 2014 Saab 9-3\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"NEVS starts production of 2014 Saab 9-3\" width=\"640\" height=\"391\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"626\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/nevs-starts-production-of-2014-saab-9-3_100478399_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/nevs-starts-production-of-2014-saab-9-3_100478399_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/nevs-starts-production-of-2014-saab-9-3_100478399_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/nevs-starts-production-of-2014-saab-9-3_100478399_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/nevs-starts-production-of-2014-saab-9-3_100478399_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/nevs-starts-production-of-2014-saab-9-3_100478399_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>NEVS starts production of 2014 Saab 9-3<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Evergrande managed to stay afloat and in late 2022 another of its EV startups, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1133727_evergrande-committed-to-hengchi-car-brand-despite-financial-woes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hengchi<\/a>, started customer deliveries of vehicles in China.<\/p>\n<p>NEVS had also planned to launch its own electric vehicles, but the company later focused on developing mobility services, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1129795_former-saab-plant-could-be-used-to-build-nevs-self-driving-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including a self-driving taxi service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NEVS originally acquired the assets of Saab in 2012 after the automaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1070797_saab-files-for-bankruptcy-official\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went bankrupt the previous year<\/a>. The original plan was to continue production of Saab cars in both Sweden and China, and while NEVS managed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1088819_saab-resumes-production-starts-with-9-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">briefly restart production of the Saab 9-3<\/a> in 2013 at Saab&#8217;s own plant in Trollh\u00e4ttan, production came to a stop less than two years later after NEVS ran out of funds.<\/p>\n<p>NEVS then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1094144_facing-bankruptcy-nevs-loses-right-to-saab-name\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost the rights<\/a> to the use of the Saab name (the rights are owned a consortium that includes the Swedish defense group also known as Saab) in 2014, and later tried to launch EVs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1027875_saab-cars-officially-dead-as-new-owner-rolls-out-nevs-brand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">under its own name<\/a> but ultimately failed to do so.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEVS, a Swedish electric-vehicle startup most widely recognized for its attempt to restart production of Saab cars early last decade, shut down this month.
