{"id":48116,"date":"2023-04-25T00:03:12","date_gmt":"2023-04-25T04:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=48116"},"modified":"2023-04-25T00:03:12","modified_gmt":"2023-04-25T04:03:12","slug":"junkyard-gem-1978-chevrolet-chevy-van","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=48116","title":{"rendered":"Junkyard Gem: 1978 Chevrolet Chevy Van"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once the 1970s really took effect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/04\/28\/boogie-van-custom-chevy-van-for-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">custom vans became all the rage<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a2154516\/1977-jc-whitney-offers-every-plastic-bubble-window-your-custom-van-could-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Bubble windows<\/a>, deep shag carpeting speckled with wacky-tabacky seeds, wood-burning stoves, 8-track players, lava lamps, black-light art on velvet, and wild exterior murals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mODHEvNKpAQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">all became\u00a0<em>de rigeur\u00a0<\/em>in the vanning world.<\/a> It wasn&#8217;t long before a slightly less red-eyed and more family-oriented variation on the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/custom+van\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">custom van<\/a> theme hit the mainstream: the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/conversion+van\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">conversion van<\/a>. Shops would start with the cargo version of a factory-fresh Detroit van and outfit it with big windows and accessories to make long <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/road+trips\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">road trips<\/a> and camping stops more comfortable. Naturally, the early conversion vans still had something of a disreputable air about them, and that whiff of degeneracy still hovers about this <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/GM%20Trucks%20and%20Vans\/1978_Trucks_and__Vans\/1978-Chevrolet-Vans-Brochure\/slides\/1978_Chevrolet_Vans-02-05.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">1978 3\/4-ton Chevy Van<\/a> that I spotted in <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradoautoandparts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">a Denver-area self-service car graveyard<\/a> recently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160115\/32-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/article\/best-power-generators\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">generation<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevrolet_van#Third_generation_(1971-1996)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">full-sized G-Series van<\/a> was built by <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">General Motors<\/a> from the 1971 through 1996 model years, going through some name changes in the process. <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chrysler\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Chrysler<\/a> offered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/11\/04\/junkyard-gem-1978-dodge-tradesman-custom-van\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">the Dodge Tradesman cargo van<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chrysler%20Trucks%20and%20Vans\/1976-Trucks-and-Vans\/1976-Dodge-Sportsman-Wagons-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">Dodge Sportsman passenger van<\/a>, plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/cars\/down-on-the-junkyard\/junkyard-find-1977-plymouth-voyager-conversion-van-44496925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Plymouth Voyager-badged counterparts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160128\/50-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Such vans catch my eye when I spy them in junkyards, because much of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/columns\/a36551014\/malaise-era-childhood-gas-lines-left-their-mark-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">my 1970s childhood<\/a> was spent riding in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1851936\/family-van-beloved-73-chevy-beauville-malaise-era-childhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">a red-and-white 1973 Chevrolet Beauville Sportvan<\/a> (which my parents bought new at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suburbanchev.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">Suburban Chevrolet in Minnesota<\/a> and which stayed in the family long enough for me to crash it as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1839256\/unearthed-photos-first-car-give-unexpected-insight-toyota-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">a teenager<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160127\/49-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This van appears to be a proper non-backyard conversion, but the interior still seems a perfect environment for the scent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iwcSNp-NET4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">Acapulco Gold<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hspKRItt8x4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">the strains of Nazareth<\/a> blasting from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/but-wait-theres-more\/a1877341\/more-reasons-be-thankful-21st-century-car-audio-hardware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">Realistic quadrophonic audio system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160122\/44-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Is there shag carpeting? If this van could talk, it would have some good stories to tell.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160109\/23-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Naturally, the velour-upholstered captain&#8217;s chairs in front are on swivel mounts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160052\/01-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For the passengers in back, these cozy swivel buckets were available.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160105\/18-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The microphone clip tells <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/cars-for-sale\/body-Van\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">us that this van<\/a> was equipped with a CB radio, as was correct.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160106\/19-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sunroofs and map lights? Check!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160125\/48-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The velour upholstery covering the sliding-door hardware is a nice touch.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160117\/38-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It appears that this van was owned by an employee of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandia.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\">Sandia National Laboratories<\/a>, located inside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirtland.af.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:31;\">Kirtland Air Force Base<\/a> in New Mexico. That&#8217;s about a seven-hour <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:32;\">Chevy<\/a> Van trip from its current, final parking spot.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160102\/14-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The base powertrain in the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/infiniti\/g20\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:33;\">G20<\/a> Chevy Van for &#8217;78 was a 292-cubic-inch (4.8-liter) straight-six, coupled to a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission. I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a39548362\/1978-chevrolet-beauville-van-with-3-on-the-tree-is-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:34;\">found a van with that setup<\/a> during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:35;\">my junkyard travels<\/a>, but nearly all conversion vans got a V8 with automatic transmission. That&#8217;s what we&#8217;ve got here. The engine lived under a doghouse that protruded fairly deep into the passenger compartment, making this a semi-mid-engined vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160059\/09-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The equipment sticker under the hood tells us that the original engine was a 400-cubic-inch (6.6-liter) small-block, rated at 175 horsepower and 290 pound-feet. It&#8217;s possible that that very engine still lives in this van, but swaps are common in <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:36;\">trucks<\/a> like this. It&#8217;s simple to build a 400 to make serious power with off-the-shelf-speed parts, as I learned when I built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2011\/10\/1965-impala-hell-project-part-15-no-replacement-for-displacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:37;\">a not-very-wild 400<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/murileemartin.com\/ImpalaRoundup.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:38;\">a 1965 Impala sedan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2011\/11\/1965-impala-hell-project-part-18-back-to-the-dragstrip-website-1999\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:39;\">knocked off mid-13-second quarter-miles with it<\/a> at the dragstrip. 400 blocks used to be worth decent money, so perhaps someone will rescue this one before <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2011\/03\/end-of-the-line-welcome-to-the-crusher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:40;\">the crusher<\/a> eats it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/13160111\/26-1978-Chevrolet-Van-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Conversion vans are still being made, and I&#8217;ve documented some of the newer ones (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2013\/08\/junkyard-find-1987-toyota-conversion-van\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:41;\">including a couple<\/a> based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/10\/13\/toyota-van-conversion-1986-junkyard-gem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:42;\">on the Toyota LiteAce<\/a>). There&#8217;s something special about a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2011\/05\/what-about-the-malaise-era-more-specifically-what-about-this-1979-ford-granada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:43;\">Malaise Era<\/a> time capsule like this one, though.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"iq6lvSVKNNw\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<p>Chevy Van beats Ford and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/dodge\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:44;\">Dodge<\/a> on <em>value<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once the 1970s really took effect, custom vans became all the rage.
