The automaker claims its batteries only lose about 12% of capacity after 200,000 miles.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-295685\"\/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle author_ad ad-container adsbygoogle author_ad hide-lg author-in-content\" data-ad-host=\"ca-host-pub-5506057612223327\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4655152367470280\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Battery degradation, which represents the loss in capacity and range over time with increasing mileage, is one of the biggest concerns of new electric vehicle buyers.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also an essential part of the equation to make electric cars more sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>The longer a battery pack can be in operation, the longer it will keep itself from being scrapped for recycling, and the longer it can keep the whole car in operation.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has rarely released data on that front, but it has done so as part of its annual \u201cImpact Report\u201d since it is pertinent to calculating the environmental impact of its electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Tesla released its 2022 Impact Report, and the automaker updated its battery degradation data \u2013 now reporting 12% battery degradation after 200,000 miles:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1440\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/Tesla-Battery-Degradation-data-2023.jpg?quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-295686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/Tesla-Battery-Degradation-data-2023.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/Tesla-Battery-Degradation-data-2023.jpg?resize=150,80 150w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/Tesla-Battery-Degradation-data-2023.jpg?resize=300,160 300w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/Tesla-Battery-Degradation-data-2023.jpg?resize=768,410 768w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/Tesla-Battery-Degradation-data-2023.jpg?resize=1024,546 1024w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/Tesla-Battery-Degradation-data-2023.jpg?resize=350,187 350w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/Tesla-Battery-Degradation-data-2023.jpg?resize=140,75 140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The results are<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/08\/12\/tesla-claims-battery-packs-lose-only-capacity-200000-miles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> similar, although slightly worse<\/a> than in its previous Impact Report.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla is also only referring to Model S and Model X battery degradation \u2013 presumably because it has more long-term data on those vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the automaker says that it will start disclosing other datasets for new battery chemistries used in more recent vehicles:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"10\">\n<p>Mileage is only one factor in battery capacity retention; battery age is also a major factor. Retention figures at lower mileages above likely reflect the impact of age while higher mileage values, which come from high-utilization vehicles, likely reflect less influence from battery age.
