There\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/09\/01\/gm-begins-us-ultium-battery-production-for-hummer-ev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one in Ohio<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/04\/14\/gm-second-massive-battery-cell-gigafactory-us-lg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one in Tennessee<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/01\/25\/gm-lg-giant-new-50-gwh-battery-cell-factory-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one in Michigan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>GM and LG have been working on a fourth US battery factory, but it was reported in January that the plan for a new battery plant in the US is <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2023\/01\/20\/gm-and-lg-halt-plans-for-a-fourth-ev-battery-plant-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on hold \u201cindefinitely\u201d <\/a>after talks between GM and LG failed to move forward.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gm-now-partners-with-samsung-sdi\">GM now partners with Samsung SDI<\/h2>\n<p>Now GM is announcing a partnership with Samsung SDI to build a new battery cell factory in the US:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"7\">\n<p>General Motors Co. and Samsung SDI announced today they plan to invest more than\u00a0$3 billion\u00a0to build a new battery cell manufacturing plant in\u00a0the United States\u00a0that is targeted to begin operations in 2026.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a press release, GM announced that the new factory will have a capacity of \u201cmore than 30 GWh\u201d and it will bring GM\u2019s total capacity in the US to about 160 GWh.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, GM and Samsung are talking about building production lines to build both \u201cnickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cells.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doug Parks,\u00a0GM\u00a0executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain, commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"11\">\n<p>We will continue to scale production and optimize the chemistry of our pouch cells for performance, range and cost using new approaches pioneered at\u00a0GM\u2019s\u00a0Wallace Battery Center and by our technology partners. The introduction of new cell form factors will allow us to expand into even more segments more quickly and integrate cells directly into battery packs to reduce weight, complexity and costs. With multiple strong cell partners, we can scale our EV business faster than we could going it alone.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>GM and Samsung SDI are not ready to disclose where in the US the new factory will be located.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s an interesting development. GM seemed to have one of the strongest battery cell partnerships in the US with LG Energy through its Ultium Cells joint venture.<\/p>\n<p>That partnership was certainly shaken by the Bolt EV battery recall, but it seemed to still be going strong.
