Electric car sales \u2013 that\u2019s battery electric and plug-in hybrids \u2013 exceeded 10\u00a0million in 2022, up 55% compared to 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The IEA\u2019s report states in the \u201cTrends in electric light-duty vehicles\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-ev-outlook-2023\/trends-in-electric-light-duty-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">section<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"11\">\n<p>In the course of just five years, from 2017 to 2022, EV sales jumped from around 1\u00a0million to more than 10\u00a0million. This rapid growth means electric cars\u2019 percentage share of the overall car market is expected to climb to 18% in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The overwhelming majority of electric car sales to date are in China \u2013 60% of global electric car sales took place there in 2022. Today, more than half of all electric cars on the road are in China. <\/p>\n<p>Europe and the US are the second- and third-largest markets. Both saw strong growth, with sales increasing 15% and 55%, respectively, in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the US, more than 320,000 electric cars were sold in the first quarter of 2023, 60% more than over Q1 2022. The IEA expects that growth in the US to continue this year, with electric car sales reaching over 1.5\u00a0million in 2023, so that would grow US electric car sales to around 12% this year.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to recent ambitious EU and US government policy programs \u2013 Europe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/green-deal\/fit-for-55-the-eu-plan-for-a-green-transition\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fit for 55<\/a> package and the US\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democrats.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/inflation_reduction_act_one_page_summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>, to include the new proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/regulations-emissions-vehicles-and-engines\/proposed-rule-multi-pollutant-emissions-standards-model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EPA emissions rule<\/a> \u2013 the average share of electric cars in total sales across China, the EU, and the US is set to grow to around 60% in 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The IEA projects for China:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"8\">\n<p>Our current expectation is for electric car sales in China to be more than 30% higher than in 2022 and reach around 8\u00a0million by the end of 2023, reaching a sales share of over 35% (from 29% in 2022).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Being that China, the EU, and the US are the world\u2019s largest polluters, this growth in EVs is good news.<\/p>\n<p>IEA executive director Fatih Birol <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/demand-for-electric-cars-is-booming-with-sales-expected-to-leap-35-this-year-after-a-record-breaking-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a> how \u201ca historic transformation of the car manufacturing industry worldwide\u201d is going to affect the global oil industry:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"9\">\n<p>The trends we are witnessing have significant implications for global oil demand. The internal combustion engine has gone unrivalled for over a century, but electric vehicles are changing the status quo.
