Why is this car in a place like this?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/22151532\/17-2003-Toyota-Prius-sedan-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>We can assume that something catastrophically expensive went wrong with this car&#8217;s powertrain, probably combined with the costly-to-replace hybrid battery pack going bad at the same time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/22151538\/29-2003-Toyota-Prius-sedan-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car will be a bonanza for a junkyard shopper looking to revive the worn-out interior of a 300,000-mile first-generation Prius.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/22151523\/03-2003-Toyota-Prius-sedan-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Hybrids are no big deal today, but this car was one of just three gasoline-electric models available in the United States when it was new (the other two were Hondas: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2003-Honda-Insight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the Insight<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2003-Honda-Civic-Hybrid__4dr_Sedan\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the Civic Hybrid<\/a>). More competitors soon got into the hybrid game; Ford introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2005-Ford-Escape\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">the Escape Hybrid as a 2005 model<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2007-Saturn-VUE+Hybrid\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the Saturn Vue Green Line<\/a> appeared in the 2007 model year (GM also offered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.com\/car-news\/chevy-silverado-hybrid-gms-first-try-261042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">a &#8220;mild hybrid&#8221; version of the Silverado in 2004<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/22151543\/34-2003-Toyota-Prius-sedan-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2003 was the biggest sales year for the first-generation Prius in the United States, with nearly 25,000 leaving showrooms that year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SnQN1j8gdls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">The roomier second-generation Prius<\/a> sold much better, with sales first cracking the 100,000-unit mark for the 2005 model year.
