Pontiac dealers here got <a href=\"http:\/\/storm.oldcarmanualproject.com\/vauxhallvictor1960.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">the British-built Vauxhall Victor<\/a>, while Buick dealers sold the Victor&#8217;s cousin, <a href=\"http:\/\/storm.oldcarmanualproject.com\/opelolympia1958.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">the German-built Opel Olympia<\/a>. We saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/09\/05\/junkyard-gem-1958-vauxhall-victor-super-estate-station-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">a discarded &#8217;58 Victor Super Estate<\/a> a few years back, and today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a> showed up recently at <a href=\"http:\/\/andersensales.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">the very same car graveyard in northeastern Colorado<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140012\/02-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Olympia name <a href=\"http:\/\/storm.oldcarmanualproject.com\/opelolympia1935.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">goes way back in Opel history<\/a>, when <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/olympic-games\/berlin-1936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games<\/a> inspired its selection. You&#8217;d think that the notoriety of the 1936 Olympics as a Nazi Party propaganda festival might have encouraged Opel to change the car&#8217;s name after World War II, but <a href=\"http:\/\/autominded.net\/brochure\/opel\/1968%20Opel%2003.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Olympia badges went on various Opels<\/a> (with some pauses) through 1970.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140040\/32-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Just as <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1964-Chevrolet\/1964-Chevrolet-Chevelle-Brochure\/slides\/1964_Chevrolet_Chevelle-02-03.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">the Malibu name began its life as a trim-level designation for the Chevelle<\/a>, so did the Rekord name get appended onto the Olympia. The Rekord name eventually took over completely, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wFqGX1GY5D4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the last Rekords<\/a> coming off the assembly line in 1986.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140047\/43-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;P&#8221; in this car&#8217;s name comes from the panoramic wraparound front and rear glass, a feature inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Buick\/1955_Buick\/1955_Buick_Brochure_2\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">the gorgeous machinery coming from GM&#8217;s Detroit car divisions<\/a> at the time. Starting in 1959, this model became known as <a href=\"http:\/\/storm.oldcarmanualproject.com\/opel1961.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">just the Opel Rekord<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140032\/22-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The influence from snouts seen on <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Buick\/1955_Buick\/1955_Buick_Brochure_2\/slides\/1955%20Buick-a01.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the 1955 Buick<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Oldsmobile\/1955%20Oldsmobile\/1955_Oldsmobile_Brochure\/slides\/1955_Oldsmobile-02-03.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">1955 Oldsmobile<\/a> is unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140035\/26-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a great deal of <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1956-Chevrolet\/1956-Chevrolet-Prestige-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">1956 Chevrolet<\/a> inspiration visible in the side view.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140038\/30-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The MSRP for this car in the United States was $1,995, which amounts to $21,818 in 2023 dollars. The similar 1957 Vauxhall Victor sedan cost $1,988 here ($21,741 in today&#8217;s money). The cheapest possible 1957 Chevrolet four-door sedan (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a40802695\/1957-chevrolet-one-fifty-sedan-is-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">the One-Fifty with straight-six engine and three-on-the-tree manual transmission<\/a>) cost $2,048 ($22,397 now). Of course, this Opel would have been in a showroom with far more upscale 1957 Buicks, which started at $2,660 ($29,090 after inflation) for a four-door.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140027\/15-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Still, this was a small car that got good fuel economy and was easy to park, yet boasted up-to-the-minute American styling. Buick dealers managed to move some of them here, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a1688876\/1969-buicks-opel-kadett-social-mini-brute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">Opels became far more commonplace on our roads<\/a> starting in the late 1960s. Yes, I bought this beautiful hood ornament; it now lives on my garage wall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140026\/12-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The engine is a 1.5-liter overhead-valve straight-four, rated at 51.3 horsepower and 78.8 pound-feet. The ancestry of this engine goes all the way back to the 1937 Olympia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140055\/51-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The only transmission available was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a34566051\/what-was-the-last-3-on-the-tree-column-shift-manual-car-americans-could-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">three-speed column-shifted manual<\/a>, which put it firmly in the American automotive mainstream in 1957.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140046\/40-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car had a big fabric-covered sliding sunroof top. I&#8217;m not sure if this is a factory option or an aftermarket job. The luggage rack on the roof doesn&#8217;t make much sense in combination with the sunroof, but it looks cool.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140049\/45-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car sat outdoors in the harsh High Plains climate for many years, and the interior is quite crispy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140016\/06-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rodent nesting material and poop are everywhere inside, which means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phidenverhealth.org\/clinics-services\/disease-investigations\/resources-education\/hantavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">hantavirus<\/a> is a threat to parts pullers. I&#8217;d wear a respirator if I wanted to grab anything serious out of this car&#8217;s interior.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/04\/23140021\/08-1957-Opel-Olympia-Rekord-P-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The body is solid, with just a bit of rust from sitting in snow every winter.
