The firm announced that investing more resources into EVs won&#8217;t spell the end of its performance-focused Gazoo Racing (GR) sub-brand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Gazoo brand will be acknowledged for the future \u2014 and maybe we can even speed it up,&#8221; Sato told British magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-news\/new-cars\/new-toyota-ceo-pledges-more-gr-sports-cars\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\"><em>Autocar<\/em><\/a> on the sidelines of the World <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lordstown\/endurance\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Endurance<\/a> Championship (WEC) race held on Belgium&#8217;s Spa-Francorchamps circuit. &#8220;Our Master Driver was also president of the company at the same time as he had a steering wheel in his hand for Gazoo. Now he is only chairman, maybe he will have a lot more time to develop cars for them?,&#8221; he added, referring to now-retired CEO Akio Toyoda, who spearheaded the sub-brand&#8217;s launch.<\/p>\n<p>One point worth noting is that his comments contradict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/10\/06\/toyota-no-more-gr-cars-gr86\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">statements made by Yasunori Suezawa<\/a>, the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/gr86\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">GR86<\/a>&#8216;s chief engineer, last October. &#8220;There is [sic] none left, actually, so [the GR86] is the last,&#8221; he announced. Sato is in charge, so he presumably gets the last word.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s too early to tell how Toyota will expand its GR-branded range of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/performance\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">sports cars<\/a>. As of writing, the global lineup includes some seriously exciting models including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/01\/14\/toyota-grmn-yaris-revealed-tokyo-auto-salon\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the GR Yaris<\/a> (the only true rally homologation special available new in 2023), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/09\/14\/2023-toyota-gr-corolla-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the GR Corolla<\/a> (which shares its basic drivetrain with the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/yaris\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Yaris<\/a>; pictured), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/article\/2022-toyota-gr86-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the GR86<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/11\/23\/2022-toyota-gr86-name-change\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">mind the gap<\/a>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/04\/28\/toyota-supra-20-road-test-promo\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the GR Supra<\/a>. Its covering more segments than most of its rivals.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is official, but it&#8217;s difficult to imagine a Toyota sports car positioned above the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/supra\/news\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Supra<\/a>. One of the voids in the GR range is a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">truck<\/a> \u2014 high-performance, off-road-ready pickups are in hot demand, and GR could be well positioned to steer Toyota into this segment. How about a GR-developed version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/04\/25\/2024-toyota-tacoma-teaser-speaker\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">the next-generation Tacoma<\/a> to take on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/02\/22\/2023-ford-ranger-raptor-reveal-twin-turbo-v6\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">the upcoming Ford Ranger Raptor<\/a>? Another option is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/02\/17\/toyota-mr2-midengine-hybrid-sports-car-rumors\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">a born-again MR2<\/a>, though we&#8217;ve heard <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/rumormill\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">rumors<\/a> outlining the car <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2012\/11\/12\/toyota-planning-supra-mr2-successors-within-five-years\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">for over a decade<\/a> and they&#8217;ve never materialized. And, buyers in the market for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/02\/08\/2023-hyundai-kona-n-road-test-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">a high-performance crossover with a relatively affordable price tag<\/a> won&#8217;t find one in a Toyota showroom \u2014 that&#8217;s another hole to fill.<\/p>\n<p>GR could also either develop a battery-powered model or create its own variant of an upcoming EV. An unverified rumor published in February 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/02\/25\/electric-supra-replacement-coming\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">claims<\/a> that the next-generation Supra will switch to <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">battery<\/a> power. And, yet another possibility is a GR-branded model equipped with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/03\/20\/toyota-hydrogen-future-ev-development\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">the hydrogen-burning three-cylinder engine<\/a> that Toyota <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/06\/07\/toyota-hydrogen-combustion-race-car\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">has been testing on and off the track<\/a> for the past couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>This is all speculation, and we expect more details about Toyota&#8217;s plans for the future will emerge in the coming months.
