{"id":49009,"date":"2023-05-05T12:03:28","date_gmt":"2023-05-05T16:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49009"},"modified":"2023-05-05T12:03:28","modified_gmt":"2023-05-05T16:03:28","slug":"1139574_ford-aims-to-capture-more-ev-newbies-with-three-row-electric-suv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49009","title":{"rendered":"Ford aims to capture more EV newbies with three-row electric SUV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Ford\u2019s F-150 Lightning electric pickup has managed to capture a high rate of customers who hadn\u2019t considered an electric vehicle before, with EV newbies making up nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134108_most-f-150-lightning-intenders-are-ev-newbies-so-ford-is-helping-them-get-ready-with-ar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">80% of reservation-holders<\/a>. And as Ford CEO Jim Farley underscored this week in a quarterly financial call, there\u2019s room to do that again in the near future with other vehicle types\u2014like with a three-row electric SUV.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cA lot of new customers bought a Lightning that never owned a pickup truck before,\u201d said Farley. \u201cAnd we intend to do that with a three-row crossover and with a bunch of EV Pro vehicles, which we think will be a huge growth for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"static-marker-video-player-primis\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ford might be eyeing the form factor of the Ford Explorer, or former Ford Flex, perhaps. That\u2019s likely one of the factors that enabled significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1139560_ford-mach-e-standard-range-lfp-battery-range-price\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">price cuts for the Mustang Mach-E lineup<\/a> again earlier this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ford hasn\u2019t yet revealed which of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1129696_ford-plans-to-build-5-electric-vehicles-in-canada-beginning-in-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several future EVs<\/a> will be built at its Canadian plant in Oakville, Ontario, potentially starting in 2025, but that\u2019s one possible manufacturing location for the three-row SUV.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100807094_m\" title=\"2022 Ford F-150 Lightning pre-production\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2022 Ford F-150 Lightning pre-production\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2022-ford-f-150-lightning-pre-production_100807094_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2022-ford-f-150-lightning-pre-production_100807094_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2022-ford-f-150-lightning-pre-production_100807094_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2022-ford-f-150-lightning-pre-production_100807094_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2022-ford-f-150-lightning-pre-production_100807094_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2022-ford-f-150-lightning-pre-production_100807094_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2022 Ford F-150 Lightning pre-production<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In Ford\u2019s last quarterly call, Farley revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138654_ford-ceo-future-evs-radically-simplified-smaller-batteries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">future Ford EVs will be \u201cradically simplified,\u201d<\/a> with fewer body styles and \u201cjust a handful of orderable combinations.\u201d He also emphasized that this will mean better quality and lower manufacturing costs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe want to have a lot of scale per top hat,\u201d said Farley in this week\u2019s call, again suggesting that the company is aiming to avoid niche models. One such example of this would be the \u201cSUV coupe\u201d body styles that some automakers have introduced to the EV market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Such an electric SUV wouldn\u2019t be the first with three rows. It would need to rival the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1139035_2024-kia-ev9-3-row-electric-suv-squares-off-with-luxury-makes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kia EV9<\/a> and, upmarket, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1138905_rivian-confirms-390-mile-r1s-max-pack-for-fall-deliveries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rivian R1S<\/a>, Tesla Model X, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1137782_2024-volvo-ex90-electric-suv-preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volvo EX90<\/a>, among others.
