The automaker plans to produce enough battery-grade lithium at the new factory to support the production of 1 million electric cars annually.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-298166\"\/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle author_ad ad-container adsbygoogle author_ad hide-lg author-in-content\" data-ad-host=\"ca-host-pub-5506057612223327\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4655152367470280\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In September 2022, we learned that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/09\/09\/tesla-license-to-print-money-lithium-refining-factory-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tesla has a plan to build a lithium refining facility on the Gulf Coast of Texas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the new plant is to produce lithium hydroxide to support its own battery cell production at Gigafactory Texas in Austin.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, we knew very little about the project other than Tesla was planning on moving fast with hope to start building in Q4 2022.<\/p>\n<p>It took a little longer to get things going, but Tesla has now officially broken ground at the location just outside Corpus Christie, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The automaker held a groundbreaking ceremony today:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p>Tesla previously confirmed that it planned to invest $365 million in the lithium plant, which would employ about 165 people full-time plus another 250 construction jobs for about two years.<\/p>\n<p>During the ceremony, CEO Elon Musk said that the factory would produce enough battery-grade lithium to build about 1 million electric vehicles per year.<\/p>\n<p>The company updated the timeline to construction being finished next year and achieving production in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla shared a render of the planned factory:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1085\" height=\"707\" src=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Tesla-Lithium-factory-render-2.jpg?quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-298187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Tesla-Lithium-factory-render-2.jpg 1085w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Tesla-Lithium-factory-render-2.jpg?resize=150,98 150w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Tesla-Lithium-factory-render-2.jpg?resize=300,195 300w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Tesla-Lithium-factory-render-2.jpg?resize=768,500 768w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Tesla-Lithium-factory-render-2.jpg?resize=1024,667 1024w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Tesla-Lithium-factory-render-2.jpg?resize=350,228 350w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/Tesla-Lithium-factory-render-2.jpg?resize=140,91 140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1085px) 100vw, 1085px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Musk previously called lithium refining a \u201clicense to print money,\u201d and he has encouraged other companies to get involved as it still plans to buy battery-grade lithium from other suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>With this factory, Tesla plans to pioneer a new production technology to push the industry to be more efficient.<\/p>\n<p>The company didn\u2019t go into great detail about its technology, but it claims that it cuts several steps in the process and reduces waste.
