Admission is free, and we will be there. Join us!<\/p>\n<p>EVs, solar, batteries, engineering, college teams, racing\u2026 This is what we\u2019re about at <em>Electrek<\/em>. That\u2019s why we\u2019re sponsoring the event along with Blue Origin, Heartland Motor Sports, and more to come.  <\/p>\n<p>But it isn\u2019t just us that keeps a close eye on these solar racers. It is important to note that EV, battery, and solar companies, including Tesla, carefully watch these events as well.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Tesla\u2019s cofounder and former CTO (and possible future <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2023\/04\/06\/tesla-co-founder-jb-straubel-coming-back-board-member\/\">board member) JB Straubel <\/a>participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2016\/05\/12\/tesla-motors-stanford-solar-car-project-key\/\">Stanford\u2019s Solar Car team<\/a> and noted (starting at about 11 minutes in the video below):<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"12\">\n<p>\u201cSolar car team\u2019s technologies are often ahead of their time in term of looking at next best generation of batteries, best solar panels, best motors and converters, things like that\u2026Most of my involvement with the solar car team was toward the end of my stay at Stanford. I had many friends that were part of that team throughout my time there and I recruited most of the people from the team, and we started\u00a0Tesla. It was a key thing at the beginning of Tesla.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, Tesla and other EV automakers and solar\/battery firms are still recruiting from these teams:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"7\">\n<p>\u201cI think it matters more than most classes you can take. I mean it\u2019s one of things that even today at Tesla we look at resumes and we consider higher than GPAs and perhaps even higher than what classes they decided here and there.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe id=\"post-youtube-video-1\" title=\"Solar car documentary about the Stanford Solar Car Project, HD Documentary about solar electric car\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w14Cnzq1QjA?start=660&amp;feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\">[embedded content]<\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>We\u2019ll have more information as race time nears. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americansolarchallenge.org\/the-competition\/2023-formula-sun-grand-prix\/\">Keep an eye on the website as well<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"16\">\n<p>Starting June 27, the solar cars will begin scrutineering \u2013 a series of inspections \u2013 including mechanical and electrical systems, body &amp; sizing, dynamic testing, and more. Teams that pass \u2018scrutineering\u2019 will then put their solar cars to the test in the 3-day track event, running June 30-July 2 with 24 total hours of drive time (three 8-hour days) on solar power. Teams are given defined morning and evening charging hours to recharge the solar car\u2019s batteries with the car\u2019s solar array. The Formula Sun Grand Prix is much more about reliability, adjusting for weather conditions, and strategic energy management than raw speed, though that doesn\u2019t mean teams won\u2019t also go for the bragging rights of fastest lap!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Innovators Educational Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit that organizes solar car events in the United States, including the American Solar Challenge (road event) and the Formula Sun Grand Prix (track event), to provide hands-on, multi-disciplined learning opportunities for college students.
