{"id":49215,"date":"2023-05-09T09:03:13","date_gmt":"2023-05-09T13:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49215"},"modified":"2023-05-09T09:03:13","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T13:03:13","slug":"mercedes-benz-cls-retiring-in-2023-with-no-successor-planned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49215","title":{"rendered":"Mercedes-Benz CLS retiring in 2023 with no successor planned &#8211; Autoblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unveiled in 2004 as a design icon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/06\/27\/2019-mercedes-benz-cls-class-review-cls450-cls53\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">the Mercedes-Benz CLS<\/a> nameplate has reached the end of the line. <em>Autoblog<\/em> learned that the current, third-generation model will retire before the end of 2023, and nothing suggests that a fourth-generation model is around the corner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In consideration of the global growth potential, and as part of our strategic product portfolio planning, we have decided to end the lifecycle of the CLS on August 31, 2023, with the changeover of the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mercedes_benz\/e_class\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">E-Class<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/04\/25\/2024-mercedes-benz-e-class-learns-from-the-past-looks-to-the-future\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">the 214 model series<\/a>,&#8221; a company spokesperson told <em>Autoblog<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The news hardly comes as a surprise. <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mercedes_benz\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Mercedes-Benz<\/a> began paring down its range of models in the early 2020s, and unverified <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/rumormill\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">rumors<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/02\/13\/mercedes-benz-allegedly-puts-two-door-s-class-cls-on-the-chopping-block\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">claimed<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/04\/06\/2022-mercedes-benz-cls-class-450-reveal\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the CLS<\/a> (pictured) was one of the cars living on borrowed time; the two-door <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mercedes_benz\/s_class\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">S-Class<\/a> was another, and it has since retired. The timing isn&#8217;t as random as it might seem: the CLS has historically been built on E-Class bones, and \u2014 as Mercedes-Benz pointed out \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/04\/01\/2022-mercedes-e-class-review\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">the current-generation model<\/a> is on its way out. It wouldn&#8217;t make sense to keep the old E&#8217;s underpinnings in production to keep the CLS around.<\/p>\n<p>Many of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/01\/31\/2019-audi-a7-drivers-notes-review-tastemaker\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the rivals<\/a> that the CLS spawned remain available new, but buyers who want a Mercedes-Benz sedan with a fastback-like roof line (or, in marketing-speak, a four-door coupe) shouldn&#8217;t rush to a competitor&#8217;s showroom yet. The spokesperson clarified that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/03\/15\/2023-mercedes-amg-gt-v8-updates\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coup\u00e9<\/a> &#8220;will continue to be part of the model range,&#8221; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/01\/18\/2024-mercedes-benz-cla-mid-cycle-refresh-revealed\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the smaller, more affordable CLA<\/a> remains in the lineup as well.<\/p>\n<p>Sending the CLS to the pantheon of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/automotive-history\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">automotive history<\/a> shouldn&#8217;t be interpreted as a sign that Mercedes-Benz is giving up on the coupe segment.
