{"id":49275,"date":"2023-05-10T00:03:23","date_gmt":"2023-05-10T04:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49275"},"modified":"2023-05-10T00:03:23","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T04:03:23","slug":"junkyard-gem-1981-subaru-gl-hatchback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49275","title":{"rendered":"Junkyard Gem: 1981 Subaru GL Hatchback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first Subarus sold in the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/photos\/1968-subaru-360-chicago-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">were 360s<\/a> imported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/11\/22\/subaru-50th-anniversary-editions-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">by Malcolm Bricklin in 1968<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/pleiades.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Pleiades<\/a>-badged brand was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/but-wait-theres-more\/a1877896\/how-things-have-changed-1977-subarus-were-too-small-sex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">best-known here for selling very cheap small cars<\/a> for more than a decade after that. Even while an increasingly devoted group of American drivers became Subaru converts thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a1708396\/1980-us-ski-team-switches-4wd-flick-lever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">the company&#8217;s innovative four-wheel-drive cars<\/a> (first appearing here as 1975 models), Subaru still competed on price with the most affordable of tiny imports in the early 1980s. Today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a> is one of those cars: a front-wheel-drive three-door hatchback Leone, found in a Colorado car graveyard recently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28142227\/61-1981-Subaru-Leone-hatchback-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Leone name wasn&#8217;t used in North America. Instead, Subaru called this car just &#8220;the Subaru&#8221; and used trim levels as de facto model names (except in the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/02\/27\/junkyard-gem-1984-subaru-brat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the Leone-with-truck-bed BRAT<\/a>). When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/04\/02\/junkyard-gem-1990-subaru-legacy-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the bigger and more modern Legacy appeared here as a 1990 model<\/a>, the Leone was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/11\/10\/junkyard-gem-1992-subaru-loyale-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">given the Loyale name<\/a>. This car is a GL, which was the nicest version of the Leone hatchback available here in 1981.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28142145\/04-1981-Subaru-Leone-hatchback-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The first Leones appeared here in 1972, with the very last ones leaving American Subaru showrooms as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/cars\/subaru\/junkyard-find-1994-subaru-loyale-4wd-wagon-44497237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">1994 Loyales<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28142234\/70-1981-Subaru-Leone-hatchback-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The cheapest possible 1981 Leone was the base three-door hatchback, priced at $4,664 (about $16,128 in 2023 dollars). This being a GL, its MSRP was $5,495 (about $19,001 today). With the GL, you got a five-speed manual instead of the base four-on-the-floor transmission, plus a bigger engine and lots of comfort and convenience features. This car has plenty of options that would have added to the price, including dealer-installed air conditioning.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28142208\/37-1981-Subaru-Leone-hatchback-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In 1981, even a single-speaker AM radio added quite a bit to the cost of an economy car. This one has a luxurious Clarion AM\/FM radio, which may have been a dealer option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28142201\/23-1981-Subaru-Leone-hatchback-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The GL got a 1.8-liter boxer-four, rated at 72 horsepower.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28142156\/18-1981-Subaru-Leone-hatchback-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car, like so many I find in Colorado junkyards, began its career in California. The California-spec &#8217;81 Leone cost $99 more than its 49-state counterparts, due to additional emissions hardware and testing ($342 now).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28142207\/34-1981-Subaru-Leone-hatchback-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I suspect that the speedometer cable and\/or odometer mechanism must have failed decades ago, because this car looks like it has driven\u00a0<em>far<\/em> more than 104,360 miles during its career.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28142202\/24-1981-Subaru-Leone-hatchback-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This crash damage probably took it out of action.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28142214\/43-1981-Subaru-Leone-hatchback-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That snow-capped mountain in the background is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a32046918\/1899-camera-captures-6-junkyard-views-of-pikes-peak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Pikes Peak<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28142210\/40-1981-Subaru-Leone-hatchback-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car served its owner or owners well for more than four decades.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"So4AEV506N4\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<p>Subaru&#8217;s advertising focused on the four-wheel-drive vehicles.
