{"id":49514,"date":"2023-05-12T12:03:09","date_gmt":"2023-05-12T16:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49514"},"modified":"2023-05-12T12:03:09","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T16:03:09","slug":"data-on-more-than-2-million-toyotas-in-japan-were-at-risk-in-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49514","title":{"rendered":"Data on more than 2 million Toyotas in Japan were at risk in breach &#8211; Autoblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TOKYO \u2014 A decade-long data breach in <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Toyota<\/a>\u2019s much-touted online service put some information on more than 2 million vehicles at risk, the Japanese automaker said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Spanning from January 2012 to April 2023, the problem with Toyota\u2019s cloud-based Connected service pertains only to vehicles in <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/japan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Japan<\/a>, said spokesperson Hideaki Homma.<\/p>\n<p>The Connected service reminds owners to get maintenance checks and links to streaming entertainment and provides help during emergencies. It can call for help after a crash or locate a car that\u2019s been stolen.<\/p>\n<p>No issues arising from the breach have been reported so far.<\/p>\n<p>Although there is no evidence any information was leaked, copied or misused due to the breach, the data at risk includes: the vehicle identification number, which is separate from the license plate; the location of the vehicle and at what time it was there; and video footage taken by the vehicle, known as the \u201cdrive recorder\u201d in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Such information cannot be used to identify individual owners, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/toyota-automaker-profit-sales-japan-840736a742a92025901e29078fb1793a\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Toyota Motor Corp.<\/a>, which makes the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/prius\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Prius hybrid<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lexus\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Lexus<\/a> luxury models.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicles belonging to about 2.15 million people have been affected, including those who used net services called G-Link, G-Book and Connected.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota\u2019s Connected service in Japan is operated by a subsidiary. Until recently, no one noticed outside access to such information should have been turned off, Homma said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so sorry to have caused such trouble to all the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is a major embarrassment for Japan\u2019s top automaker, which has built a reputation for quality and attention to detail.<\/p>\n<p>Automakers worldwide are competing to differentiate model offerings with the latest technology to lure buyers.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with the system has been fixed, Homma said, so it\u2019s safe to continue driving Connect-enabled vehicles as usual, and there is no need to bring them in for <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/auto-repair\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">repairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TOKYO \u2014 A decade-long data breach in Toyota\u2019s much-touted online service put some information on more than 2 million vehicles at risk, the Japanese automaker said Friday.
