Since it&#8217;s <em>very <\/em>unlikely that I&#8217;ll fun across a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2010\/10\/22\/forgotten-concept-1933-dymaxion-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Fuller Dymaxion<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/specials\/2007\/article\/0,28804,1658545_1657686_1657662,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Horsey Horseless<\/a> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewepullet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Ewe Pullet<\/a>, I knew I&#8217;d have to keep my eyes open for #8 on the list: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/05\/12\/volkswagen-phaeton-used-car-spotlight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">the Volkswagen Phaeton<\/a>. Just over 2,200 Phaetons were sold in the United States, but I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/05\/08\/junkyard-gem-1980-datsun-280zx-black-red-10th-anniversary-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">found similarly rare machines<\/a> just by being persistent. Sure enough, I found this &#8217;05 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.picknpull.com\/locations\/42\/fairfield-ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">a Northern California yard<\/a> recently, a few rows over from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a43524991\/1974-rolls-royce-silver-shadow-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/04130811\/32-2005-Volkswagen-Phaeton-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Since the name Volkswagen means\u00a0<em>People&#8217;s Car<\/em>, you&#8217;d think that the idea of a showy luxury sedan bearing the badges of such a proletarian brand wouldn&#8217;t make much sense in North America. After all, Toyota, Nissan and Honda each grasped that American vehicle shoppers associated their brands with sensible but affordable machinery (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/drives\/a2135311\/best-car-world-building-toyota-century\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">such is not the case back in Japan<\/a>) and created separate <em>snootified<\/em> marques to sell their luxury wheels over here.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/04130752\/11-2005-Volkswagen-Phaeton-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/08\/26\/volkswagen-ferdinand-piech-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Ferdinand Pi\u00ebch<\/a> decreed that there would be a big VW luxury sedan based on the same platform as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E3jaQ8iiFp8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">the Bentley Continental GT<\/a>, stuffed with running gear borrowed from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2004-Audi-A8\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">the Audi A8<\/a>. This happened, and the Phaeton was the result. Phaetons were built from the 2003 through 2016 model years, but only the 2004 to 2006 models were sold in the United States and Canada. This car is <a href=\"https:\/\/carsalesbase.com\/us-volkswagen-phaeton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">one of 820 Phaetons<\/a> sold in the USA for the 2005 model year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/04130801\/20-2005-Volkswagen-Phaeton-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A bewildering variety of engines, both gasoline and diesel, were available in Phaetons sold elsewhere, but just two made it to North American VW dealers: a 4.2-liter V8 and a 6.0-liter W12. This car has the V8, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2005-Volkswagen-Phaeton\/specs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">rated at 335 horsepower and 317 pound-feet<\/a> (the W12 had 420 horsepower and 406 pound-feet).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/04130757\/16-2005-Volkswagen-Phaeton-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll be pleased to know that this engine made nearly 14 times as many horses as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2014\/01\/30\/vw-beetle-65-years-in-us-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">the first Volkswagens imported to the United States<\/a> (and that&#8217;s\u00a0<em>before<\/em> factoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/ateupwithmotor.com\/terms-technology-definitions\/gross-versus-net-horsepower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">the gross-versus-net ratings switcheroo<\/a> that happened here in the early 1970s).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/04130749\/09-2005-Volkswagen-Phaeton-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>How much was all this luxury? The MSRP on this car was $66,950, or around $105,967 in 2023 American dollars. Meanwhile, the cheapest possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2005-Volkswagen-Golf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">2005 Volkswagen Golf<\/a> listed at $15,830\u2026 and the penny-pinching aura hovering around every one of those cheap VWs migrated over to every Phaeton (in the eyes of those who judge others by the snazziness of their possessions, at any rate). By the way, <a href=\"http:\/\/storm.oldcarmanualproject.com\/vwbeetle1949.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">the 1949 Beetle<\/a> cost $16,098 in 2023 dollars, which was a pretty good deal at the time, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesamba.com\/vw\/forum\/viewtopic.php?t=443074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">the scary cable-operated brakes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/04130808\/27-2005-Volkswagen-Phaeton-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>All that said, this thing was an engineering masterpiece. Just take a glance at these trunk hinges, which look like something from an intergalactic space probe.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/04130744\/04-2005-Volkswagen-Phaeton-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>By all accounts, the US-market Phaetons were extremely comfortable and drove well. The problem for Volkswagen of America was that few fat-walleted car shoppers wanted to pay for one instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2005-Mercedes_Benz-S_Class\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">a Mercedes-Benz S-Class<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2005-Lexus-LS+430\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\">Lexus LS<\/a> (another problem was that American vehicle buyers had been shunning sedans of all sizes for quite a few years by the middle 2000s). I thought about buying these clever cupholders for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/diy\/a40393562\/building-an-indestructible-race-track-pit-party-junkyard-parts-boombox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:31;\">a car-parts boombox project<\/a>, but they were held in by exquisitely German proprietary fasteners that resisted my crude mainstream tools.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/04130816\/36-2005-Volkswagen-Phaeton-in-California-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car doesn&#8217;t seem to have been wrecked, though parts shoppers have extracted all the valuable front lighting and trim components (probably for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/266236788920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:32;\">resale on eBay<\/a>). My guess is that it got into the hands of a third or fourth owner who didn&#8217;t understand the maintenance costs of a high-end European luxury vehicle, and the first five-figure repair estimate doomed it.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"GWCaLtbyhCg\" data-thumbnail=\"\"\/>\n<p><em>How perfectly do you leap when you have leapt 1,000,000 times?
