Chevrolet alone moved well past a million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a43799134\/1965-chevrolet-biscayne-four-door-sedan-in-denver-junkyard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Biscaynes<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2014\/02\/junkyard-find-1965-chevrolet-bel-air\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Bel Airs<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2017\/06\/1966-chevrolet-impala-4-door-hardtop-in-colorado-wrecking-yard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Impalas<\/a> every year then, while Ford wasn&#8217;t far behind in sales from its line of big, comfortable rides. In 1966, <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1966_Ford\/1966-Ford-Full-Size-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">the full-sized Ford line<\/a> in the United States had <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1966_Ford\/1966-Ford-Full-Size-Brochure-Rev\/slides\/1966_Ford_Full_Size_Rev-18-19.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">the stripped-down Custom and Custom 500<\/a> at the bottom, with <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1966_Ford\/1966-Ford-Full-Size-Brochure-Rev\/slides\/1966_Ford_Full_Size_Rev-16-17.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">the Galaxie 500<\/a> a step higher and <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1966_Ford\/1966-Ford-Full-Size-Brochure-Rev\/slides\/1966_Ford_Full_Size_Rev-04-05.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the snazzy LTD<\/a> sitting at the very top of the big Ford pyramid. The Galaxie 500 was the biggest seller of the four, with sales about evenly split between <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1966_Ford\/1966-Ford-Full-Size-Brochure\/slides\/1966_Ford_Full_Size-02-03.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the rakish two-door fastback<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1966_Ford\/1966_Ford_Full_Line_Brochure\/slides\/1966_Ford_Full_Line-05.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">the sensible four-door post sedan<\/a>. Here&#8217;s one of those sedans, spied recently in <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradoautoandparts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">a self-service yard just south of Denver<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140249\/61-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This family-owned yard has an off-limits-to-public storage lot next door to the pull-parts-yourself area, full of interesting old cars. To make room for\u00a0<em>more<\/em> interesting stuff, they sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/dickensheet.bidwrangler.com\/ui\/auctions\/72053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">auction off excess inventory<\/a> from their private-reserve area (which often get purchased by other junkyards and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a38631471\/1966-ford-mustang-coupe-is-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">put in\u00a0<em>their<\/em><\/a> parts inventories). Other times, they&#8217;ll just move some of the special cars into the regular parts-yanking yard. A good dozen of them just appeared there, including the Mustang II and Mercury Montego MX Brougham you see flanking today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a> in the above photo, plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/cars\/down-on-the-junkyard\/junkyard-find-1959-studebaker-lark-viii-deluxe-4-door-sedan-44500549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">a 1959 Studebaker Lark VIII<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a43799134\/1965-chevrolet-biscayne-four-door-sedan-in-denver-junkyard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">1965 Chevy Biscayne with six-cylinder and three-on-the-tree manual<\/a>, a big-block &#8217;71 Impala coupe and some other cars I&#8217;ll share later.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140153\/04-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>List price on this car started at $2,784, which amounts to something like $26,425 in 2023 dollars. This particular example is packed with costly options, as you&#8217;ll see, so its out-the-door price was likely a lot higher.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140200\/11-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>First of all, there&#8217;s this 352-cubic-inch (5.8-liter) big-block &#8220;Interceptor&#8221; V8 engine, rated at 250 horsepower. This engine is a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ford_FE_engine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">the fabled FE family<\/a>, which included the better-known 390, 427 and 428 engines that went into the wilder Mustangs and muscle cars.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140215\/26-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 352 had been around since 1958 and was last used in 1967 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/10\/27\/junkyard-gem-1966-ford-f-100-flareside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">F-Series trucks<\/a>. Yes, I bought this emblem for my garage wall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140202\/14-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The base engine in all but the ritziest 1966 full-size Fords was a 240-cubic-inch straight-six rated at 140 horsepower, but Dearborn <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Ford\/1966_Ford\/1966-Ford-Full-Size-Brochure-Rev\/slides\/1966_Ford_Full_Size_Rev-24.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">had you\u00a0<em>well<\/em> covered<\/a> if you wanted to pay for more power that year. There were V8s of 289, 390, 427 and 428 cubic inches available, with power ratings going all the way up to 425 horsepower (that twin-four-barrel 427 Cobra had insane-for-the-time 11.1:1 compression and a drag-race-grade lumpy cam and proved to be a stalling, overheating nightmare in ordinary stop-and-go driving).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140204\/15-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car has the optional three-speed automatic transmission as well, which added $184 to the cost ($1,746 today). The base transmission in the lower trim levels of Galaxie 500 (e.g. this car) was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a34566051\/what-was-the-last-3-on-the-tree-column-shift-manual-car-americans-could-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">traditional three-speed column-shift manual<\/a>. To get a four-on-the-floor manual transmission in a &#8217;66 Galaxie, you had to buy the 315-horse 390 or better with it (though in reality, a friendly dealer probably could have arranged a special order with any engine\/transmission combination Ford made).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140207\/19-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Factory air conditioning cost $353 extra ($3,351 after inflation), but this car appears to have been fitted with a Montgomery Ward Riverside &#8220;Supreme&#8221; A\/C unit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05151718\/98-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The build tag tells us that this car was assembled on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/April_1966#April_1,_1966_(Friday)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">April Fool&#8217;s Day of 1966<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/pcad.lib.washington.edu\/building\/19856\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">the Los Angeles Assembly plant in Pico Rivera<\/a>, then sold through the Denver sales office. The color is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volocars.com\/vehicles\/8356\/1966-ford-mustang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Medium Sage Gold Metallic<\/a> and the interior is Gold. Interestingly, Northrop bought Los Angeles Assembly in 1982 and (in secret) used it for the development of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber; today, the site is <a href=\"https:\/\/shoppico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">a shopping mall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140227\/38-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It appears to have spent at least a couple of decades sitting outside in the High Plains elements. The interior is ruined, while the body is banged up but not hopelessly rusty.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140209\/21-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The problem with cars sitting outdoors for years around here is that rodents move in and proceed to chew the upholstery into nesting material and then deposit inches-thick layers of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hantavirus\/hps\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">hantavirus-hazard poop<\/a>. I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/11\/19\/junkyard-gem-1986-ford-escort-pony-hatchback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">seen much worse<\/a>, but this car is\u00a0<em>nasty<\/em> inside.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140229\/39-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The rat poison didn&#8217;t last long.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/05\/05140211\/22-1966-Ford-Galaxie-500-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The critters even chewed on the original owner&#8217;s manual.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the middle 1960s, the affordable full-size car was king of Detroit.
