{"id":49763,"date":"2023-05-16T12:03:28","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T16:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49763"},"modified":"2023-05-16T12:03:28","modified_gmt":"2023-05-16T16:03:28","slug":"stellantis-halts-construction-canada-battery-plant-over-incentives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=49763","title":{"rendered":"Stellantis Halts Construction Of Canada Battery Plant Over Incentives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stellantis and its battery joint venture partner LG Energy Solution stopped construction of their planned EV battery factory in Canada amid a dispute with the federal government over support for the $3.7 billion plant.<\/p>\n<p>The Franco-Italo-American carmaker is accusing Canada of not keeping its side of the bargain regarding the plant in Windsor, Ontario.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As of today, the Canadian Government has not delivered on what was agreed to therefore Stellantis\u00a0and\u00a0LG Energy Solution will begin implementing their contingency plans. Effective immediately, all construction related to the\u00a0battery module production on the Windsor site has stopped,&#8221; Stellantis said in a May 15 statement to <em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis previously said the battery cell plant, which is estimated to cost $3.7 billion (5 billion Canadian dollars) to build, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/575562\/stellantis-lges-45gwh-gigafactory-canada\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22575562%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22stellantis-lges-45gwh-gigafactory-canada%22%7D\">will be able to produce 45 gigawatt-hours (Gwh) of lithium-ion cells and modules a year<\/a> for its EV assembly operations in Canada and the US, creating some 2,500 new jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The site was designed to assemble both cells and modules in two different sections. The project included about $1.1 billion (1.48 billion Canadian dollars) from <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/590082\/stellantis-lges-battery-jv-nextstar-energy\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22590082%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22stellantis-lges-battery-jv-nextstar-energy%22%7D\">LG Energy Solution<\/a> and undisclosed contributions from federal and provincial governments.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Champagne said, &#8220;We continue to negotiate in good faith with our partners. Our top priority is and remains getting the best deal for Canadians,&#8221; according to <em>Automotive News Canada<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said Canada was having &#8220;good discussions&#8221; with Stellantis, after a newspaper reported that automaker was looking for better government subsidies than originally offered by Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>According to a May 11 report from <em>The\u00a0Toronto Star<\/em>\u00a0newspaper, Stellantis is now threatening to pull the plug on the module portion of the plant unless Canada offers a deal similar to the one Volkswagen received this year.<\/p>\n<p>VW Group&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/663774\/vw-group-canadian-cell-plant-annual-output-90-gwh\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22663774%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22vw-group-canadian-cell-plant-annual-output-90-gwh%22%7D\">battery gigafactory in St. Thomas, Ontario, worth up to $10 billion (13 billion Canadian dollars) in incentives<\/a>, is the biggest single investment ever in the country&#8217;s EV supply chain.
