The Stout never really caught on here, despite its cool name, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toyota-global.com\/company\/history_of_toyota\/75years\/vehicle_lineage\/car\/id60015512\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">a more civilized small Toyota pickup<\/a> proved to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/but-wait-theres-more\/a1840411\/late-1960s-toyota-ashtray-was-optimized-chain-smoking-hylux-salesmen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">an enduring sales success<\/a> on our side of the Pacific: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a31199857\/junkyard-treasure-1971-toyota-hilux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">the Hilux<\/a>. Today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a> is a first-model-year example of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">the third-generation Hilux<\/a>, retired in Colorado after more than four decades of hard work.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135306\/61-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Toyota began selling the Hilux in the United States under its home-market name in the late 1960s, but phased out that name here during 1973. After that, the North American Hilux became known as the Toyota Truck. So, the correct model name for this truck is Truck.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135300\/52-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In keeping with that naming tradition, Toyota later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2023\/01\/31\/junkyard-gem-1984-toyota-van\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">called the MasterAce Surf the Toyota Van<\/a> in North America. Nissan and Mitsubishi likewise named their mid-engined Vanette and Delica vans the same way on our shores (<a href=\"http:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/junkyard-treasures\/junkyard-treasure-1987-nissan-van-gxe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the Nissan Van<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a1825091\/junkyard-treasure-1989-mitsubishi-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Mitsubishi Van<\/a>). Sadly, the Corolla was not renamed the Toyota Car for the American market. In any case, most American Hilux owners refer to their Trucks as Hiluxes these days.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135303\/56-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin1.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The second-generation Hilux sold very well here, and its reign stretched from 1972 through 1978. Because so many were sold and they held together so well, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/Junkyard\/JunkyardGallery-Toyota.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">still find some second-gen Hiluxes during my boneyard travels<\/a>. The bigger third-generation Hilux was sold here for the 1979 through 1988 model years, and it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/drives\/a1687901\/2018-toyota-tacoma-helps-save-its-1988-toyota-truck-ancestor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">proved so indestructible<\/a> that you&#8217;ll still see them everywhere in the non-rusty regions of our continent. The final new Hiluxes sold in the United States were 1995 models, after which the Tacoma shoved them aside forever.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135234\/12-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin1.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This Truck has the 2.2-liter SOHC <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toyota_R_engine#20R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">20R<\/a> four-cylinder engine, which was rated at 90 horsepower and 122 pound-feet. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/12\/17\/junkyard-gem-1977-toyota-celica-gt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">The U.S.-market Celicas of this era<\/a> got the same engine.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135232\/11-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin1.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 20R and its 2.4-liter successor, the 22R, remain legendary for their reliability. This is a genuine <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toyota_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Warlord Grade<\/a> engine.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135242\/22-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll bet this Truck covered an impressive number of miles during its life, but Toyota used a five-digit odometer here and so we can&#8217;t know whether it has 59,008 miles or 659,008.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135236\/15-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin1.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The underhood emissions sticker tells us it&#8217;s a &#8220;49-state&#8221; vehicle, not originally sold in California.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135245\/26-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>1979 Truck buyers could get an automatic transmission, but I&#8217;ve seen very few so equipped.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135225\/05-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This one has the optional five-speed manual, which was considered sufficiently special that Toyota advertised it on the tailgate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135254\/42-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin1.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s some rust, but nothing too serious by the standards of 1970s Japanese vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135247\/30-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin1.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fujitsu.com\/us\/about\/local\/corporate\/subsidiaries\/ften\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Fujitsu TEN<\/a> factory AM\/FM radio would have been considered a frivolous luxury in most late-1970s work trucks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135243\/24-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Would you believe\u00a0<em>air conditioning<\/em> in a small truck of this era? That&#8217;s very unusual.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"grp-full\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1200x675\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2023\/03\/28135257\/47-1978-Toyota-Hilux-in-Colorado-junkyard-photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Why is it here? A pickup this size would be considered too small and too underpowered by most potential buyers these days, and then there&#8217;s the fact that few American drivers can operate a manual transmission.
